Longwood Track Continues Strong Start to Spring

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Longwood track continued to gear up for the outdoor track season with a trip to the Liberty Open for a second indoor meet in a couple of weeks.

Christian Reid broke the 1,000M record on the men's side, as did Andrew Hathaway in the mile. Sophie Farley finished fourth in 102-runner field in the 800M, and a host of other runners set personal bests or posted strong times as the team continues to build up.

The women's 4x400M relay also smashed the team's record, and Matthew Fitzner put together a program best mark in the triple jump.

NOTABLES:

Farley, who was an all-conference selection on the cross country course in the fall, ripped off a 2:13.56 in the 800M that was both an indoor personal best and school record. The time will also stand up as one of the top times in the Big South.

Reid ran a 2:41.30 in the 1,000M, and both Connor Williams (2:43.85) and Daniel Duarte (2:51.56) ran personal bests as well.

In the mile, Hathaway put together a 4:28.59 to lead the team, and Clinton Clancy ran a 4:30.40 to finish right behind him. For Hathaway, it was his personal best by 10 seconds.

On the women's side, Nicole Pinder (5:25.01) and Priscilla Keller (5:26.21) ran together in the mile for personal bests.

Kirsten Morley put together a smart race in the 3,000M despite battling sickness a week ago, and her time of 10:38.58 was barely off her school record time set two weeks ago.

Pinder (10:43.70) and Keller (10:46.73) ran together again and set personal bests in the same race.

In the men's 3,000M, Benjamin Goulet once again ripped off a strong time with an 8:45.05, and Saad Khan crushed his personal best with his first time under nine minutes at 8:54.96.

Alec Daniel (9:20.24) and Misha Wiley (9:24.48) also set personal bests in the same race.

For the 5,000M, Haley Slattery cruised to an 18:59.40 while setting the school record and finishing 12th out of 32 runners.

Chris Smith won his heat in the 800M and led from the opening gun, breaking the school record with a 1:56.32. Hathaway also finished under two minutes with a 1:59.13.

On the sprints side, Ayden Stewart continued his strong growth with personal bests in both the 200M (22.63) and 400M (49.91).

Tristan Duplissey's time of 9.05 helped him qualify for the Darius Dixon Invitational in the 60M hurdles.

Lilliana Arevalo put together the school's best time in the 400M in indoor with a 1:01.09, and Mayson Jenkins was solid with a 62.69 that was second-best in the team's indoor history.

The women's 4x400M relay team of Nyomi Rhodes, Arevalo, Jenkins and Farley also smashed the school record with a 4:05.97.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"This was a big step forward across the board for our program," said Longwood Head Coach Brooke Craig. "A lot of school records continued to go down, as expected for a new program, but they also were set with new standards in sight. This team doesn't just want to set records, they want to compete well within the Big South, and this weekend showed we are moving in that direction. We have one more indoor meet to make a statement before we get back to training for our outdoor campaign."

"This was a huge win for the entire team," said Assistant Coach-Head of Sprints, Jumps and Hurdles Rob Gritzer. "The team is building their confidence back and racing with purpose. If they're putting up times like this while we're still training hard, it's going to be very fun to see what they can do when we get to outdoor."
