Athletic scholarships to Longwood University enable young men and women to attend Longwood University and develop academically, as citizen-leaders, and as a competitive athletes at the Division I level. The ability to provide scholarships for our 14 varsity programs is paramount to establishing and maintaining competitiveness within Big South Conference and against NCAA peer institutions.
Lancer Scholarship Fund
Gifts given to the Lancer Scholarship Fund are used to support the current scholarship needs of student-athletes. The Lancer Scholarship Fund provides coaches and the Athletics Director with flexibility in strategic recruitment and retention of talented Lancer students-athletes.
Named Scholarship Funds
Permanently named scholarship funds provide the backbone of Longwood Athletics' private scholarship support by offering necessary resources in perpetuity. A named fund may be named for the donor or for someone the donor chooses to honor. Named athletics scholarships may also be designated for a specific sport.

Current Named Scholarship Funds:
- Arlene D. Cundiff Scholarship: A scholarship funded by Arlene Cundiff, a member of the Class of 1969, to support a Women's Lacrosse, Basketball, or Field Hockey student-athlete from Virginia.
- Ashley Warren Taws Scholarship-Athlete Award: Ashley Warren Taws, Class of 1990, epitomized the Longwood Scholar-Athlete during her years as a student and lived those values throughout her life. She was a self-motivated, academically gifted, intensely competitive, socially responsible, and personally amiable student-athlete. This award was established to recognize on an annual basis, a member of the Women's Golf Team at Longwood who exhibits the same kind of extraordinary combination of character, intelligence, athleticism, and amiable personality that is Ashley's legacy.
- Barbara B. Smith Scholarship: Dr. Barbara B. Smith served Longwood College as a dedicated Golf Coach and faculty member for thirty years and she was a nationally recognized teacher and coach. Dr. Smith inspired the entire Longwood community through her dedication and loyalty. She gave her time, talent, and resources to Longwood. The friends of Dr. Smith, her current and former student-athletes, her colleagues, and her fellow coaches created this scholarship in honor of her retirement from Longwood.
- B. Todd Dyer '93 Women's Soccer Scholarship: This scholarship was established in 2018 through the support of former players, teammates, and friends of Longwood's long-time women's soccer coach, Toddy Dyer '93. The scholarship was started to celebrate Coach Dyer's service to the women's soccer program as the first and only head coach the program has seen to date, and will provide financial assistance to women's soccer student-athletes for years to come.
- Betty Gail Payne Wolfrey Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize the generous commitment made by Betty Gail and Greg Wolfrey to endow a new scholarship in support of student-athletes at Longwood University. The recipient(s) of the award(s) shall be a full-time student-athlete seeking an undergraduate degree from Longwood University.
- Charles B. & Andrea G. Bolding Scholarship: Created by Coach Buddy Bolding and his wife Andrea Bolding, to attract and retain a student-athlete who is a member of the Longwood University Baseball team.
- Charles Wilbur & Medora Ford Cocke Scholarship: Created by Charles Wilbur and Medora Ford Cocke, to attract and retain a student,athlete.
- Charlotte Campbell Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize the generous commitment made by Jason Fletcher, class of 2001 and Debra Fletcher, to endow a new scholarship in support of student-athletes at Longwood University. The scholarship is named in memory of Jason's grandmother, Ms. Charlotte Campbell. The recipient(s) of the award(s) shall be a full-time student-athlete seeking an undergraduate degree from Longwood University.
- David E. Napier Memorial Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize the generous commitment made by Kevin Andrew Napier '18 to endow a new scholarship in support of student-athletes at Longwood University in honor of his late father, David E. Napier. The recipient(s) of the award(s) shall be a full-time student-athlete seeking an undergraduate degree from Longwood University.
- Djork-Charleton Family Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize the generous commitment made by Elizabeth Charleton Cole to endow a new scholarship in support of student athletes at Longwood University. The recipient(s) of the award(s) shall be a full-time student athlete seeking an undergraduate degree from Longwood University.
- Ducharme Family Athletics Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is honor Colin Ducharme '01 and his commitment to support the mission of Longwood, as well as the financial need of her students. The recipients of the award(s) shall be a full-time University student and a member of a varsity intercollegiate team in good academic standing who demonstrates determination, sportsmanship, and an identifiable work ethic that unquestionably distinguishes the athlete from his/her peers.
- Elizabeth Burger Jackson Athletic Scholarship: The purpose of the scholarship is to attract and retain a student-athlete with first preference given to a member of the Longwood University Field Hockey Program.
- Elizabeth Thompson Patrum Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is to attract and retain a student-athlete with a first preference given to a member of the Longwood University Women's Basketball program.
- Farmer Family Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize the generous commitment made by the Farmer Family (Stuart, Leigh, Page, and Carrie) to endow a scholarship in support of student-athletes at Longwood. Page Farmer, Class of 2010, was a four-year member of the Women's Lacrosse team. The recipient of this scholarship should be a full-time student-athlete seeking an undergraduate degree.
- Florence Lee Putnam Memorial Scholarship Fund: The purpose of this fund is to memorialize Florence Lee Putnam, a loving wife, mother, lifelong sports enthusiast, and a member of the Longwood Class of 1941.
- Heintz – O'Neil Scholarship: Created by Dr. Shirley O'Neil who served Longwood College from September 1, 1966 until her retirement on May 31, 1988 to honor her dear friend, Dr. Mary A. Heintz, who served Longwood College with honor and distinction from September 1, 1962 until her retirement on May 31, 1985.
- Dr. James Thornton '85 & Mrs. Mary Larkin Thornton '88 Scholarship: Created from the generous support of Dr. James Thornton, Class of 1985, and Mary Larkin Thornton, Class of 1988, this scholarship helps a student-athlete to succeed and may be awarded to any full time student-athlete.
- Jerome Kersey Men's Basketball Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize the lasting legacy and impact made by Jerome Kersey '84 to Longwood University, Longwood University Athletics, the Men's Basketball program and the Farmville community, both on and off the court.
- Mark D. McArdle Scholarship Fund: Created by the family, teammates, and friends of Mark D. McArdle '86, a Soccer Team All-American. This scholarship is to attract and retain a student-athlete for the Longwood University Men's Soccer Program.
- Marvin L. & Lelia W. Pollard Scholarship: Created by Marvin L. and Lelia W. Pollard, Class of 1953 to attract and retain a student athlete to Longwood.
- Mary Tolley Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize the generous commitment made by Mary Tolley, class of 1969, to endow a new scholarship in support of student-athletes at Longwood University. Additionally, Ms. Tolley wishes to honor the memory of Cynthia Anne Smith, class of 1980 from Appomattox, VA. The recipient(s) of the award(s) shall be a full-time student-athlete seeking an undergraduate degree from Longwood University.
- Michael Anthony Tucker Baseball Scholarship: Created by Michael Anthony Tucker, to attract and retain a student-athlete with first preference to a member of the Longwood Baseball program.
- Dr. Ray A. Gaskins Basketball Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize the longstanding commitment made by Dr. Ray A. Gaskins to Longwood University and the Men's Basketball program.
- Ruth & Mike Lewandowski Athletics Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize the generous commitment made by Ruth and Mike Lewandowski to endow a scholarship in support of student athletes at Longwood University. The recipient(s) of the award(s) shall be a full-time student-athlete seeking an undergraduate degree from Longwood University.
- Shirley Duncan Scholarship: Created by Coach Shirley G. Duncan, the purpose of this scholarship is to attract and retain a student-athlete who is a member of the Longwood University Women's Basketball team.
- Sonny Bolton Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize the generous commitment made by Sonny Bolton to endow a scholarship in support of student-athletes at Longwood University. Sonny Bolton, Class of 1984, was a member of the Baseball Team and a member of the 1982 team that reached the NCAA Division III College World Series. That team was inducted into the Longwood Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016. The recipient of this award shall be a full-time student-athlete seeking an undergraduate degree from the University.
- Team Martin for the Win Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize the generous commitment made by Robert and Sherry Martin to endow a scholarship in support of student-athletes at Longwood University. The recipient(s) of the award(s) shall be a full-time student-athlete seeking an undergraduate degree from Longwood University.
- Thomas Edward Meadows, Jr. & Michelle Evette Meadows Softball Scholarship: The recipients of the award(s) shall be a full-time University student seeking an undergraduate degree Longwood University and a student-athlete member of the softball team.
- Verhappen Family Athletics Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is to support the mission of Longwood, as well as the financial need of her students. The recipients of the award(s) shall be full-time University students and members of the Varsity Field Hockey team in good academic standing. The student-athlete will be confirmed by the Director of Athletics and in conjunction with the Financial Aid Office and must adhere to all NCAA, admissions, and financial aid guidelines.
- W. Hoke Currie Athletics Scholarship: The purpose of this scholarship is to honor W. Hoke Currie, Longwood' s Sports Information Director from 1979 to 1997, and his countless contributions to Longwood and Lancer Athletics. Additionally, this scholarship serves to support the mission of Longwood, as well as the financial need of her students. The recipients of the award(s) shall be a full-time University student and member of a Varsity Intercollegiate Athletics Team. The fund will be awarded by the Director of Athletics.
