Longwood, Bank of the James Announce Scholarship Recipients

Five Lancer Student-Athletes Earn Inaugural Scholarships

FARMVILLE, Va. – Last spring, Longwood athletics and Bank of the James announced a 10-year partnership that included the establishment of five scholarships annually given to women student-athletes at Longwood.

On Saturday, the athletics department announced the inaugural recipients of the scholarships: Otaifo Esenabhalu (Women's Basketball), Cierra Gawryluk (Softball), Oriana Izarra (Women's Tennis), Isabella McCullough (Women's Lacrosse) and Avery Miller (Softball).

"All five of these young women are outstanding representatives of Longwood University and are more than deserving of this honor," said Longwood Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Tim Hall. "They have excelled both in the classroom and on the field or court, and it is an honor to recognize them for their work. In addition, we are grateful for the partnership with Bank of the James that makes this possible. Their generous support has already made an incredible difference in the lives of our student-athletes, and that support will continue to make a difference going forward."

The Lancer women's teams boast a rich history that goes back more than a century. Even amid the rich history, the Lancer women broke the fall term GPA record collectively with a 3.65 GPA.

In addition, each team had a team GPA of at least 3.50 in the fall, and the women's teams combined to have 116 student-athletes post a GPA of 3.50 or better.

"Bank of the James is honored to be able to support the Longwood University's women's athletic programs and these future leaders," said Executive Vice President Patrick Richardson. "Empowering these talented student-athletes will help ensure a strong path forward for all of us."
