Surging Delaware Derails Longwood's Streak, 7-0

Lancers Wrap Up Spring Break Road Trip 2-2, Return Home to Host Coastal Carolina Monday

ELKTON, Md. – A streaking Delaware squad swept the doubles point and rolled to a 7-0 win over visiting Longwood Saturday evening at Elkton Indoor Tennis Center, derailing the Lancers' two-match win streak in the bookend to their four-match spring break road trip.

Led by the 1-2 duo of Amanda Studnicki and Denny LaMachia, the Blue Hens (7-2) won for the seventh time in their past eight matches and improved to 5-0 on their home court. Studnicki and LaMachia survived three-set singles bouts against Longwood ace Fallon Burger and No. 2 Anna Pelak to clinch the win before cruising to the sweep with straight-sets victories at Nos. 5 and 6.

With the loss, Longwood (6-7) concludes its spring break trip to the Northeast at 2-2, rebounding from a 6-1 loss at Rutgers Wednesday to down Coppin State 7-0 Friday and Rider 6-1 Saturday morning. Delaware was Longwood's second match of Saturday's doubleheader.

"This was a tough one tonight," said Longwood head coach Bruce Myers. "We were tired, and this is the wrong team to be tired against. Overall I think we grew closer over break, and hopefully this will carry over as we play the heart of our conference schedule."

For the first time since the Rutgers matchup on March 9, Longwood deployed its full lineup, rolling with the Nos. 1-6 quintet of Burger, Pelak, Isis Gill-Reid, Paloma Alatorre, Mason Thomas and Maria Coronel. Despite playing her second doubles and second singles bouts of the day, Pelak still managed to take LaMachia three sets before falling 10-7 in the third set en route to a 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 loss.

Burger also took Studnicki to the wire with the Lancer freshman ace battling Delaware's No. 1 10-8 in the third set after knotting the score with a 7-5 win in set two. Studnicki gained the upperhand in the final frame, however, taking down Burger 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 to improve to 6-3 while playing at No. 1 this season.

The Lancers, who remain just four wins shy of back-to-back 10-win seasons for the first time since joining the Division I ranks in 2007-08, return home for a three-game homestand beginning Monday against Big South foe Coastal Carolina. Longwood will then host Winthrop on March 18 and Gardner-Webb on March 19 before hitting the road again to take on George Mason on March 26.
