CLINTON, S.C. — The Longwood women's tennis rattled off victories on the final three matches of the day to take a 5-2 decision over Presbyterian on the Templeton Center Tennis Courts in Big South action on Thursday.
Tied, 2-2, Longwood (9-7, 3-1 Big South) received wins from Alexandra Magia, Bali Song and Hima Fernando, respectively — the latter two in three sets — to seal the victory.
Magia gave Longwood a 3-2 advantage in the dual with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sofia Rodrigo Hidalgo on court five. Song then clinched the match at No. 1 with a 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-2 defeat of Roxana Valdes. Fernando topped Ladina Bruhin at No. 2, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3, for the final margin.
The Lancers took an early lead in the match, winning the doubles point. Oriana Izzara and Song bested Luciana Parrilli and Rodrigo Hidalgo, 6-2, on court one before Bruhin and Valdes beat Fernando and Gnilozubova, 6-3.
Magia and Feline van Eijkelenburg then outlasted Grace Katzman and Mary Ellen Longmire, 7-6 (6), to take the point.
Longmire began single with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Nicole Di Bisceglia for a 1-1 tie prior to van Eijkelenburg taking care of Parrilli, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3. Katzman followed with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Izarra on court four to knot the dual a final time.
The win is the Lancers' first against PC since April 3, 2016, also a 5-2 tally in Clinton.
Presbyterian fell to 6-12 overall and 1-2 in the league with the loss.
Longwood is back at it Tuesday at 2 p.m., in a non-conference match at North Carolina A&T.
