Longwood Falls in Pair of Weekend Matches

Malin Allgurin improves to 4-2 from the top spot in the singles lineup

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Longwood dropped a pair of weekend matches at the U.S. Naval Academy. The Lancers fell to Seton Hall Friday afternoon, 5-2, before falling to Navy Saturday, 6-1.

Since its 3-0 start to the Bruce Myers era, the Lancers have dropped three straight and now sit with an overall record of 3-3.

Longwood is slated to host Washington & Lee Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. on Lancer Courts, before making the short drive to Lynchburg Wednesday to face in-state foe Liberty at 1 p.m.

Seton Hall 5, Longwood 2

After taking the crucial doubles point, Longwood was unable to sustain the success in singles, as Seton Hall earned a 5-2 victory over the Lancers Friday evening at the U.S. Naval Academy.

"This was a strange match, indeed," said Longwood head coach Bruce Myers. "Seton Hall is a deep team and has eight talented players who are very well coached. We knew we were the underdogs today, which usually helps motivate us to play better."

Longwood earned the doubles point in come from behind fashion with victories on courts one and three. The Pirates picked up the first doubles victory at the No. 2 position, as the Longwood duo of Anna Pelak and Nicole Parker was unable to hold off Katie Kim and Madison Shoemaker, 8-1.

However, Malin Allgurin and Paloma Alatorre posted their third victory of the season at the top position, 8-4, over Seton Hall's Julia Keenan and Hannah Liljekvist. On court three, Maria Coronel and Mason Thomas sealed the doubles point and gave Longwood a 1-0 lead with a thrilling 8-5 victory over Marisa Quevedo and Luize Strike.

"We came out hot and got the doubles point, but we were totally flat in singles and looked extremely rusty," Myers said. "Obviously the weather recently has wreaked havoc on our practice schedule, but it's not an excuse for not being ready to play."

Longwood was unable to sustain its momentum in singles, as Seton Hall earned five straight set victories. Strike evened the team score at 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Pelak, while Isabell Klingert gave the Pirates their first lead of the match, 2-1, with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Parker at the sixth spot in the order.

Alatorre fell by a 6-3, 6-1 score at the fourth position against Kim, while Thomas was able to get Longwood within one, 3-2, at the fifth spot in the order with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Keenan. The victory was the fifth straight for Thomas to open the season.
