5.6.2012

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University women's lacrosse senior captain Hannah Riggs|Eden Prairie, Minn. (Eden Prairie) and sophomore defender Kathleen Battle|Nellysford (St. Anne's Belfield) were each voted to the All-National Lacrosse Conference Second Team as announced at Saturday evening's post-season tournament banquet in Davidson, North Carolina. This is Rigg's second honor on an All-NLC Team and Battle's first. Also released by the Conference office was the Academic All-League Team and All-Tournament Team. Riggs, Battle, Sam Stifler|Jarrettsville, Md. (North Harford), Jessica Rudloff|West Chester, Pa. (West Chester East), Katie Carbiener|Orlando, Fla. (Olympia), Jamie Brentlinger|Gambrills, Md. (Arundel), Alexa Anderson|Richmond (St. Catherine's), Emily Whitman|Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) and Lauren Prasnicki|Lexington (Rockbridge County) earned a spot on the All-Academic Team, while Prasnicki was the lone Lancer named to the All-Tournament Team.

Riggs anchored the Lancer defense in her final season, leading the team and the conference with 53 ground balls prior to the post-season tournament, which also ranked 2nd nationally. She was third in the loop with 56 draw controls (3.73 per game) as well. After two conference tournament matches, the tri-captain ends her senior campaign with a Longwood program season-high 69 draw controls and a team-high 61 ground balls. The midfielder also registered game-highs of four goals vs. Presbyterian (4.13), six shots on goal vs. Presbyterian (4.13), seven ground balls twice, seven draw controls four times, and three caused turnovers three times. Her game-high tallies of seven draw controls also ranks first in Longwood program history while her career total of 106 draw controls is fifth-best in the record book. Her 67 caused turnovers through her four years as a Lancer is 10th on the all-time list, and she is tied for first in Longwood history for 69 games played.

This was truly a breakout year for Battle as she was 3rd in the league for ground balls per game with 2.73, which ranked 18th in the NCAA prior to post-season action, and surpassed all of her previous season totals from last year by wide margins. She started all 17 games this season after getting the starting nod just eight times in 2011, while ultimately collecting 44 ground balls that's up from 29 a year ago; 21 draw controls that more than quintupled the four she registered from last season; and her 18 caused turnovers this season is six more than last. In 2012, Battle had game-highs of seven ground balls vs. Cincinnati (3.2) and three caused turnovers vs. Louisville (2.24).

To be eligible for recognition on the Academic All-League Team, a student-athlete must be a sophomore in class standing, carry a GPA of 3.40 or above on a 4.0 scale, and have been a starter or key reserve. Carbiener earned a 3.70 GPA this semester as an Exercise Science major, Stifler tallied a 3.59 GPA as a Biology major, Riggs totaled a 3.41 GPA as an Exercise Science major, Rudloff is an Exercise Science major with a 3.80 GPA, Brentlinger majors in Exercise Science and holds a 3.62 GPA, Anderson is a Physical and Health Education Teacher Education major with a 3.56 GPA, Prasnicki tallied a 3.41 GPA as an Exercise Science Major, and Whitman majors in Biology and got a 3.67 GPA.

After totaling 13 points in two games via six goals and seven assists, Prasnicki was deservedly selected to the All-Tournament Team. She also combined to register three ground balls and two draw controls in both post-season games. Most notably, the sophomore tallied four goals and six assists for a game-, season- and career-high 10 points against Howard on Saturday (5.5). The 10 points and six assists are also a Longwood program record. The four goals was the second time she tallied a game-high in that category, and the six assists were also a game-high. Her six shots on goal vs. Liberty (4.27) was a game-high, too.
