Longwood Wins Tina Barrett Invitational At The Manor Resort Golf Club

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University posted a final round of 302 Tuesday in women's golf for a record-setting 54-hole total of 914 (301-311-302) to finish in first-place among 12 teams at their own Tina Barrett Invitational played at The Manor Resort Golf Club in Farmville.  Longwood also established new team tournament records for 18 holes (301) and 36-holes (612) while finishing 57 shots ahead of the University of Akron, runners-up with its 326-326-319--971.  Sophomore Kameron Carter/Bassett (Bassett) took individual medalist honors for the Lancers among the 66 collegiate golfers with her new tournament-record of 77-73-77--227 at the 6,076-yard, par 72 course at The Manor Resort.  Longwood completed its 2008-09 women's golf campaign with the winning performance this week.
   
Carter also tied the tournament-record for 36-holes (150), and led the field in par 3 scoring (2.83, -2) and birdies (8), while third in par 4 scoring (4.33, +10), tied for fourth in pars (30), and sixth in par 5 scoring (5.25, +3).  It was her second tourney win this year as she also won the season's first event (Towson Women's Invitational, 71-70--141).  Carter was followed closely by senior individual runner-up Mary Carmody/Cortland, N.Y. (Cortland) (77-77-75--229) and third-place sophomore Brooke Mallory/Brockville, Ontario (St. Mary Catholic) (77-80-73--230).  Senior Kara Spence/Hampton (Phoebus) (70-81-84--235) tied for fifth-place individually after her tournament-record round of 70 to open on Monday morning, while junior Laura Barrett/Blackstone (Nottoway) (89-88-77--254) tied for 27th-place as the Lancers had the top three finishers and four of the top five individuals overall.
   
Also competing for Longwood were freshman Alexa Boucher/Orange (Orange) (87-88-81--256, 29th), junior Kelly McAnally/Virginia Beach (Landstown) (83-89-88--260, t-32nd), and redshirt-freshman Mary Hashagen/Manassas (Osbourn Park) (94-97-85--276, t-51st).  Boucher's 256 was a career-best as was her final round of 81.  McAnally's 260 is also a career-best as was her opening round of 83.
   
Carmody was second in par 5 scoring (5.00, E), tied for second in pars (33), tied for fourth in par 3 scoring (3.08, +1), tied for fifth in birdies (5), and was sixth in par 4 scoring (4.40, +12).  Mallory tied for second in pars (33), tied for fourth in both par 3 scoring (3.08, +1) and par 5 scoring (5.17, +2), and tied for fifth in both par 4 scoring (4.37, +11) and birdies (5).  Spence was second in par 4 scoring (4.27, +8) and tied for third in birdies (6).  Longwood led the field in all five team categories: par 3 scoring (3.18, +11), par 4 scoring (4.42, +63), par 5 scoring (5.35, +21), birdies (26), and pars (142).

Through 11 tournaments and 28 rounds of golf, Carter finished the year with her team-best 76.1 scoring average and was followed by Carmody (77.0), Spence (79.6), Mallory (79.8), Barrett (86.4), McAnally (86.7), Boucher (87.2), and Hashagen (87.3).  Carmody and Spence each concluded their respective collegiate careers with scoring averages of 79.0 and 83.3, respectively, as Carmody's 79.03 ranks fourth-best among the school's career scoring average rankings.  Carmody is expected to begin competing on the 2009 Duramed FUTURES Tour, the LPGA's developmental tour, later this spring.

Longwood finished 2008-09 with a team scoring average of 312.04, just off last year's school-record of 311.86, earning the two tournament wins among eight top five team efforts overall in the 11 events.  The Lancers could return as many as six letterwinners for 2009-10.
