MORGANTON, N.C. – Longwood women's golf may have been shorthanded to start the day, but three top-five performances over 36 holes have the team in second place at The Mimosa Invitational with one round to go.
Avery Nordman,
Abigail Sheldon and
Madison Lehr made sure the top five on the leaderboard is full of Lancers at the Mimosa Hills Golf & Country Club on the par 72 course.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
The Lancers are in second behind only Charlotte, and Longwood is just three shots back of the tournament leaders. A two-round tally of 302-302—604 (+28) has Longwood two shots ahead of the hosts, Appalachian State, as well.
Two players were out due to illness for Longwood, meaning that all four golfers, Nordman, Sheldon, Lehr and
Emma Rynn, would have their scores count for both rounds.
Nonetheless, they handled the pressure.
Nordman got off to a slow start in the first round, but she grew stronger as the round went on to finish with an even-par 72, and she followed it with a 74 to card a 72-74—146 (+2) that is six shots back of Charlotte's Pinky Chaisilprungruang—the 59
th ranked player in the nation. She finished with eight birdies on the day.
Abigail Sheldon opened the day with a bang by acing the par 3 sixth hole on her first swing, and she added a trio of birdies in her second round to card a 74-73—147 (+3) that has her in sole possession of third behind Nordman.
Lehr rounded out the top five in the field by tying for fifth with a 74-76—150 (+6). She continued her strong run of form with four birdies in the round and nothing worse than a bogey.
Rynn, meanwhile, made her Longwood debut, and she knocked three strokes off her opening round score in round two to finish with an 82-79—161 (+17) to end the day tied for 36
th.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"It's a real bummer that Chiara [Wippert] and Caroline [Tragesser] both have the flue, so we didn't have a fifth player in the mix," said Longwood Head Coach
Megan Weaver. "Today we had exceptional commitment to the strategy. Avery, Abigail and Madison lit it up, all sitting in the top five! It was a good test of playing with the pressure of knowing their scores were all counting. Oh, and shout out for Abigail getting a hole-in-one on the first hole!"
