SAINT HELENA ISLAND, S.C. – Longwood women's golf made it to match play in the Big South Championship for the second time in three years under head coach
Megan Weaver, but the Lancers were narrowly edged 3-2 by UNC Asheville on Wednesday morning.
Â
Madison Lehr and
Abigail Sheldon both won their matches against second-seeded UNC Asheville, and the final went down to the wire at the Ocean Creek Golf Club at Fripp Island Resort.
Â
NOTABLE RESULTS:
Â
Lehr led the way for Longwood after tying for third in stroke play. She took the lead for good over Lauren Madson on her ninth hole (the 18
th on the course, as Longwood started on the back nine). Then she went on a tear over the first four holes, winning three, to take a four-up lead. She clinched the point for the Lancers with three holes to play for a 4&3 win.
Â
Sheldon, who tied for seventh in stroke play, also clinched a point with holes to spare, winning 4&2. She never trailed in her match against Jordyn Arts, taking the lead on the  and never giving it up. She extended the lead to four-up on the fifth hole and clinched it two holes later on the seventh after a hiccup on the sixth.
Â
Asheville's
Breanna Hoese clinched her point 5&4 over
Caroline Tragesser, while Pennie Osterberg traded blows with Longwood freshman
Avery Nordman for 17 holes.
Â
Nordman fell behind early, but she rallied to tie things up on the 11
th hole. However Osterberg was able to take a two-hole lead on the fifth and sixth before ultimately clinching on the second-to-last hole.
Â
Chiara Wippert dueled with Caroline Patterson throughout the round, with the two golfers tied for 10 of the 17 holes they played. Wippert took an early lead by making birdie on turn to the front nine, but Patterson tied it back up one hole later, and the Big South stroke play champion went up two holes on the fifth before matching Wippert shot-for-shot for the final three holes to clinch.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"I couldn't be more proud of all the team has accomplished this year!" said Longwood Head Coach
Megan Weaver. "I had three main goals for the year, and making it into match play was the final check off the list. We obviously would have loved a different outcome this morning, but we put up a good fight."
