GREENVILLE, N.C. - Longwood women's golf matched the program 18-hole record with a 2-under 286 as a team on Tuesday, leading to a fourth-place finish in a 13-team field at the Pirate Collegiate Classic. Over the two-day event, the Lancers established a new 54-hole school record of 4-over par 868.
NC State won the tournament, shooting a 13-under 851, while UNCG (4-under 860) and host East Carolina (1-under 863) finished second and third.
Longwood sat in fifth place after the opening 36 holes on Monday. The Lancers fired a 294 (+6) in the opening round, before turning an even par 288 in round two. Longwood moved up a spot on Tuesday thanks to matching the school record with a 2-under 286. The Lancers previously shot the record total in the second round at the UNCW Seahawk Classic in 2012. The 54-hole school record, relative to par, also came at the event when the Lancers posted a 9-over 873.
Four different Lancers fired five total rounds under par throughout the two-day event. Sophomore Avery Nordman led the way, posting red figures in each of her final two rounds. After an opening round 73 (+1), she carded a 1-under 71 in round two and a 2-under 70 on the final day of competition.
Nordman finished in a share of 12th place behind a career-best 2-under 214. It ranks as the third-best 54-hole score in school history. Over the three rounds, Nordman ranked second in the field in par 3 scoring, going 3-under (2.75).
Juniors Madison Lehr and Abigail Sheldon both carded 4-under 68's on the opening day of the tournament. Lehr finished with six birdies in her opening round 68, while Sheldon totaled five compared to just one bogey in firing the score in the second round. The 4-under 68 score is tied for the second-best 18-hole score in school history.
Both Lehr and Sheldon finished in 26th place at 4-over 220.
Junior Chiara Wippert closed out the tournament strong with a season-best 2-under 70. Making her round more impressive, she birdied the first three holes of the final nine, on the way to a 32 (-4) on the back side. Wippert finished in 30th place at 221 (+5), and she ranked ninth in par 4 scoring at the event (4.07).
Freshman Romy Wagner rounded out the Lancer group in 42nd place with a score of 225 (+9). She saved her best for the third and final round, posting a 2-over 74 behind a trio of birdies.
Quotable
"I'm so proud of the team's performance! This was a very talented field, so to finish fourth and continue to improve each round was amazing. Finishing +4 is our best team score (relative to par) in program history for 54 holes and the 868 ties the stroke record. A pair of 68's yesterday by Madison and Abigail, followed by Chiara and Avery each firing 70 today continues to show our depth." - head coach Meagan Weaver
