MORGANTON, N.C. – Longwood women's golf wrapped up an impressive two-day run in third place at The Mimosa Hills Invitational on Tuesday.
The Lancers only had four players healthy to play, but the team was going shot-for-shot down the stretch for the tournament title throughout the final round.
Emma Rynn carded the team's low round on the day to climb up the standings to lead the charge.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
Thanks to Rynn, who posted an even-par 72 on the day, Longwood had hopped Charlotte with a handful of holes left in the round.
However, the 49ers had their final two players card a birdie on the 18
th hole, one by chip and the other by draining a 21-foot putt, to put Charlotte on the top of the leaderboard. The Lancers finished third, one shot behind the tournament hosts in Appalachian State and two back of Charlotte, with a 302-302-304—908 (+44).
After Rynn had knocked off three strokes from her opening round in round two yesterday, she shaved seven more strokes off in the final round. The freshman four birdies in her final 18 holes, and she played her final 10 holes at two-under to card an 82-79-72—233 (+17).
Rynn climbed into a tie for 20
th in her debut tournament.
Avery Nordman, meanwhile, was solid once again for the Lancers. The freshman posted her best finish as a Lancer in the team's final tournament of the season. She finished second behind a 72-74-76—222 (+6), behind only the 59
th ranked player in the nation, Pinky Chaisilprungruang, who won the event. Nordman had 10 birdies over the three rounds.
For Nordman, it was her first top five finish this season while also serving as her third finish in the top 10.
Madison Lehr also matched Nordman with a 76 in the final round, which saw her tie for eighth in the field. The sophomore had a pair of birdies in the final round and totaled a 74-76-76—226 (+10). She has now finished in the top eight in three straight tournaments.
Abigail Sheldon closed the event tied for 10
th, with the sophomore picking up her second top 10 finish of the spring. She posted a 74-73-80—227 (+11) and had four birdies and an eagle in her three rounds.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"If you told me two days ago, with only four players in the van, that we would finish in third, one stroke behind App State and two strokes behind Charlotte, I wouldn't have believed it," said Longwood Head Coach
Megan Weaver. "I honestly just hoped no one else came down with the flue and we would be able to compete. These ladies fought hard and played well. Emma was so confident today, draining so many putts! Avery's swing was a bit off today, but she battled through to maintain her runner-up finish. It was a bummer we ended plus-six on the last two holes, but it was amazing competition and great pressure to feel going into the conference tournament!"
