Longwood Finishes 3rd At Richmond; Senior Mary Carmody Runner-Up

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Longwood University posted a final round of 300 Tuesday in women's golf for a 36-hole score of 305-300--605 to finish in third place among 14 teams at the Spider Invitational hosted by the University of Richmond.  The University of Maryland won the event with its 305-295--600, while the Terrapins' Jessica Hollandsworth took individual medalist honors with her 72-71--143 at the 6,118-yard, par 72 Independence Golf Club in Midlothian.  Senior Mary Carmody/Cortland, N.Y. (Cortland) led the Lancers with her runner-up effort after a career-low round of 68 for a career-best total of 76-68--144.  Longwood completed its fall portion of this year's schedule with the Richmond tournament.
   
Carmody's four-under-par round of 68 on Tuesday was the best round of the two-day event by two strokes (70) among the field of 81 collegiate golfers.  She also tied the school-record with the 68 (Stephanie Hicks, 2005), and was followed by sophomore Brooke Mallory/Brockville, Ontario (St. Mary Catholic) (74-77--151, t-10th), senior Kara Spence/Hampton (Phoebus) (79-75--154, t-16th), sophomore Kameron Carter/Bassett (Bassett) (76-80--156, t-26th), along with junior Laura Barrett/Blackstone (Nottoway) (81-86--167, t-59th).  Mallory also posted new collegiate career-bests for both 18 (74) and 36 (151) holes during the competition.  Carmody, with her second-straight runner-up effort, led the field in par 3 scoring (2.75, -2), was tied for second in birdies (6), tied for fourth in par 5 scoring (5.00, E), and tied for fifth in both par 4 scoring (4.10, +2) and pars (24).  Mallory tied for first in par 5 scoring (4.75, -2), and tied for 10th in birdies (5).  Spence led the field in eagles (1), tied for second in birdies (6), and tied for 13th in par 4 scoring (4.20, +4).  Carter tied for fifth in both par 4 scoring (4.15, +3) and pars (24).

Through five tournaments, and 13 rounds of golf, Carmody and Carter lead Longwood with their identical scoring averages of 75.2 and are followed by Mallory (78.6) and Spence (80.1).  Other averages include redshirt-freshman Mary Hashagen/Manassas (Osbourn Park) (84.4), Barrett (85.6), along with freshman Alexa Boucher/Orange (Orange) (85.7).  The Lancers averaged an impressive school-record pace of 308.5 for team scoring this fall, winning one tournament and finishing as runners-up once and earning a pair of third-place finishes.
   
Longwood will open the 2009 portion of the schedule February 22-24 at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate in South Carolina, a 54-hole tournament to be hosted by College of Charleston.
