FARMVILLE, Va. – Josh Cummins carded his first career win for Longwood men's golf, and the Big South Conference announced he was the Big South Men's Golf Freshman of the Week this afternoon.
Â
Cummins won the Larry and Wally Edgell Battle at Brunswick last weekend, leading a field of 95 players at the Brunswick Plantation & Golf Resort in Calabash, North Carolina.
Â
The Lancer freshman was one of two players to finish below par, with his 73-71-70—214 (-2) giving him medalist honors by one stroke.
Â
In addition, he finished with 10 birdies and did not have anything worse than a bogey in the 54 holes. That run included a first round that featured severe weather that caused a weather delay.
Â
He entered the final round with the lead, and he fired five birdies in his final round to ensure he won.
Â
He is the second Lancer to earn Freshman of the Week honors, joining
Matthew Hartley, who garnered the accolade on February 26.
Â
The Lancers return to the course at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, March 23-24, at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Virginia.
