Lancer Men's Golf Seventh after Second Round Suspended Due to Darkness

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – David Lafreniere was on a heater all day. A delayed start due to fog couldn't slow him down, and he is on track for back-to-back rounds below par to tie for first with a handful of holes left at the Surf Club Invitational.

The junior helped Longwood finish the day in the top 10, with every team in the field a few holes short of finishing up their second rounds when play was suspended due to darkness at the Surf Golf & Beach Club.

NOTABLE RESULTS:

The day started with a fog delay for an hour and 10 minutes but that didn't matter to Lafreniere.

He ripped off an opening-round 68 to start the day, and he recorded a bogey-free run that stretched to 26 holes. He had seven birdies in that stretch.

Then he followed it with a pair of eagles in his final seven holes on the day, and he is nine under with two holes remaining in his second round.

That has helped Longwood sit seventh at three under on the leaderboard with a handful of holes to go in round two. The team is three shots back of Boston College and four back of North Carolina A&T and Augusta in fourth. Five shots would draw Longwood even with Butler in third. Georgia State, at 19-under, leads the field while Elon is second at 12-under.

Cameron Hardison, competing as an independent, is tied for sixth with three holes to play in his second round. He posted a 70 in the first round and is three under through 15 holes in round two.

Freshman Matthew Hartley is tied for 26th. He shot an even-par 71 in the opening round before sitting one under in his second round with four holes remaining.

Fellow freshman Gabriel Mainella is tied for 71st. He shot a 75 in the opening round and is one over with three holes remaining in round two. Matthew Lyons is tied for 80th after posting a one-over 72 in the opening round and sitting five over in round two. Hunter Swidzinski is also tied for 80th. He was even in the opening round with a 71 before sitting six over in round two.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"The tournament started in the fog, and it looked like some of us were in a fog at the start as well," said Longwood Head Coach Kevin Fillman. "We probably combined to play the first three or four holes of the morning round at five over, maybe even more. Once we settled in, I thought we did play a lot of really solid golf for about 25 holes. Unfortunately, we let a few go as the suspension of play got nearer, and, outside of hole 18, a number of those came on holes where we cannot afford to lose shots."

"Obviously David was really, really good, and he kind of held our team in there all day too," Fillman added. "I heard him say after we were done for the day that he had a 26-hole bogey-free streak. That's pretty impressive."

"As a team, we still have a fantastic opportunity to go beat a lot of people tomorrow," Fillman said. "It's going to take everybody focusing only on the things that help and to do so better than we did at times today. Hopefully, we can quickly get into the kind of rhythm we had in the middle portion of today's play and sustain it through the end of the tournament."
