Student-Athletes Break Yearly GPA Record

FARMVILLE, Va. – It might be the end of the semester and the academic year, but it is the same story for Longwood student-athletes. They crushed it in the classroom. Again.

As a department, student-athletes combined for a 3.41 GPA in 2024-25 to break the department record of 3.37 that was set in 2023, tied in 2024 and now broken in 2025.

That success came behind back-to-back strong semesters. After a record-setting 3.41 GPA in the fall, student-athletes posted a 3.42 in the spring that is the second-best mark for the second semester, behind only the spring of 2020.

Fifteen out of the 16 teams notched a GPA above 3.0, and 81 percent of the student-athletes had a GPA above 3.0. In addition, the Lancers have now achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 for 17 straight semesters, and it is the 10th straight year with a 3.0 or better across the entire academic year.

"I am so proud of our student-athletes, coaches and support staff for their work and success in academics," said Longwood Athletics Director Tim Hall. "This is yet another testament to the determination and grit that our student-athletes have. Their ability to compete at a high level while also maintaining a high standard of sustained academic excellence always impresses me. Likewise, this is the fruit of a labor of love that often goes unseen from those who support our student-athletes in their academic journey, and I am glad for the chance to celebrate those results."

Lancer student-athletes have now compiled a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 for 17 straight semesters.

135 student-athletes earned either Dean's List or President's List honors, which are available to undergraduates only. Ninety-three garnered a spot on the Dean's List for a GPA between 3.5-3.99, and 42 more posted perfect 4.00s to snare a spot on the President's List.

Another 12 graduates posted perfect 4.00s, and six others had a GPA that would have earned Dean's List recognition if eligible.

"I am extremely proud of the hard work that our student-athletes continue to put into their academics," said Longwood Associate Athletics Director of Academics and Student Services Farrah Young. "These results are a reward and a proof of all that the student-athletes have poured in while here at Longwood. Every semester, they set the bar high, and they continue to reach higher. Congratulations!"

The Lancer women's tennis team had the highest GPA in the department with a 3.74 to help the women's team's combine for a 3.51 GPA. Women's soccer and women's golf tied for second among women's teams with a 3.66 GPA, and women's lacrosse was right behind them with a 3.52.

On the men's side, the teams combined for a 3.31 GPA that was the second-highest combined GPA, behind only the spring of 2020. Men's tennis led the way with a 3.62, and men's golf chipped in with a 3.60. Men's soccer was third with a 3.54.

In addition, men's golf and women's soccer extended streaks with a GPA above 3.0 to 33 straight semesters, and field hockey reached 22 straight semesters with the same mark. Softball has now reached the 3.0 plateau in 17 straight semesters, and men's basketball had a cumulative GPA above 3.0 for a seventh straight year while women's basketball did the same for the sixth time in seven seasons.
