HIGH POINT, N.C. – Longwood track wrapped up the Big South Championships with plenty of new team records and some all-conference honors as well.
Sophie Farley,
Zachary Seidel and
Ayden Stewart all claimed podium finishes on the day to help lead the Lancer men and women to their best result yet as a young program at the conference championship meet.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
Both the men and women posted 21 points apiece, their highest totals at the Big South Championship, bolstered by a young squad that saw tremendous growth throughout the spring.
Farley helped usher in the high-level performances by, yet again, breaking the program record in the women's 1,500-meter race. She finished second, just one second behind the champion, with a time of 4:24.60 to earn All-Big South honors.
Seidel followed suit a few events later. He stormed to a 14.45 in the men's 110-meter hurdles to finish third while breaking his own team record in the process to earn All-Big South honors.
Stewart then threw down a 47.45 in the men's 400-meter race to claim a third-place finish, and his time lowered the program record once again as he earned All-Big South honors.
Farley added a sixth-place finish in the women's 5,000-meter race to add more points to the Lancer women's tally.
Both 4x400-meter relay teams broke team records and finished fifth. The quartet of
Nyomi Rhodes,
Rachael Zimmer,
Riley Humphries and
Liliana Arevalo posted a 3:54.82.
Jacob Childs,
Jaidyn Foddrell,
Justin Goode and
Ayden Stewart matched them with a fifth-place finish behind a 3:14.98 that was lowered the team record.
Rhodes also lowered the women's 400-meter hurdles record that she had set earlier in the event with a 1:01.30 in the final. She finished sixth.
In addition, the women's 4x100-meter relay team of Rhodes,
Amber Glass,
Rickyah Mitchell-Hairston and Zimmer broke the program's record with a 48.03.
Finally,
Daniel Duarte and
Emily Johnston were honored following the event as Longwood's Big South All-Academic Team representatives.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"This championship was a big step forward for the program," said Longwood Director of Cross Country and Track & Field
Brooke Craig. "We scored the most points in program history on both sides and had several competitors that were close to making it to finals. With a very young squad, I am so proud of the growth they showed this year."
