FARMVILLE, Va. – Year two of the 3 for 3 Challenge was bigger and better. After raising more than $1,000 dollars last year, the partnership between Longwood athletics and State Farm Agent Edgar Jones upped the ante to continue making a big impact in the local community.
This year, the State Farm corporate office is matching the donation from Jones, which was over $1,200, to double the amount to nearly $2,500.
"We're proud to continue the 3 for 3 Challenge alongside Longwood athletics, and we're especially grateful that State Farm is able to match these donations to help expand the impact across our region" said Jones. "It's a fun and meaningful way to connect the excitement of Longwood basketball with supporting the mission of Habitat for Humanity."
The money will go to the Piedmont Habitat For Humanity, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating affordable homeownership opportunities across the counties of Prince Edward, Buckingham, Cumberland, Charlotte, Nelson and Nottoway.
"We are so appreciative to benefit from the three-point prowess by the Longwood basketball teams and the generosity from Edgar Jones and State Farm," said Sam Rabon, the Executive Director of Piedmont Habitat for Humanity. "Edgar has been a long-time supporter of the mission of Habitat, and we are so thankful for his continued generosity. Because of him—and so many like-minded neighbors through the years—the community has made it possible to build or repair 100 homes across our region."
The partnership began when Jones committed to donating $3 for every made three by the Longwood men's and women's basketball teams, and the teams combined to make more than 400 triples.
"We're excited about this year's partnership between Longwood athletics and State Farm in support of Habitat for Humanity and the meaningful impact the organization continues to make across our region," said Longwood Deputy Athletic Director for External Operations Austin Shaver. "This collaboration is a great example of how Longwood basketball can bring people together around something bigger than the game. We're thankful for Edgar's continued generosity, partnership and commitment to supporting our community."
Longwood basketball again ranked in the top two in the Big South in attendance for both men's and women's basketball this year with multiple sellouts. The Lancer women advanced to the Big South Semifinals as well.
