FARMVILLE, Va. – Once again, Longwood's student-athletes knocked the academics out of the park.
The student-athletes combined to post a 3.48 GPA for the academic year, breaking the record that was set last year.
That success came on the heels of a strong spring that saw them combine for a 3.45 GPA, the second-highest mark in team history.
In addition, every team contributed with a GPA above 3.0. A total of 83 percent of the student-athletes posted a GPA above 3.00, and the spring effort gave the department 19 straight semesters with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
"Our student-athletes continue to impress me with their ability to excel as both students and athletes," said Longwood Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics
Tim Hall. "They have put in the work, and their grit and determination to succeed stands out. Congratulations to them for seeing the payoff of all their hard work, and congratulations to our coaches and support staff for their work in helping guide our student-athletes throughout the year. These outstanding results, and the work necessary to achieve them, can often go unseen, and I'm glad we get to share and celebrate them together."
Thanks to the strong effort in the spring, the teams combined for a 3.48 GPA on the year, with more than 100 student-athletes earning a spot on the Dean's List (undergraduate GPA of 3.5 or greater), with another 40 garnering President's List honors (perfect undergraduate GPA of 4.0).
"The continued academic success of our student-athletes reflects the high standards we uphold and the outstanding individuals who make up our programs," said
Farrah Young, Associate Athletics Director for Academics and Student Services and Senior Women's Administrator. "Setting GPA records once again is an achievement we are incredibly proud of—it highlights the dedication, discipline and commitment our student-athletes bring to the classroom every day. These accomplishments are a testament to the strong culture of excellence at Longwood, one that continues to thrive and reach new heights."
The Lancer women's teams combined for a 3.59 GPA, which is the highest combined spring GPA for the women's teams in school history, and the men posted a 3.28 GPA, their third-highest mark in department history.
Women's golf led the way with a 3.71 GPA, with women's tennis right behind them a 3.69 and women's lacrosse at 3.65. Women's soccer extended a streak with a GPA above 3.0 to 35 straight semesters, and field hockey made it 24 straight semesters with at least a 3.0. Softball has now done it for 19 straight semesters, and women's basketball achieved it for the seventh time in eight seasons.
On the men's side, men's golf recorded a 3.70 GPA to lead the men's teams and give the team a 3.70 or better for back-to-back semesters this year. Men's soccer also carried a 3.50 GPA, with men's cross country and track posting a 3.30 GPA. The Lancer men's golf team extended their streak to 35 straight semesters with at least a 3.0 GPA.
