MACON, Ga. – Due to expected inclement weather tomorrow, Longwood women's golf opened up the Brickyard Collegiate a day early.
 
Instead of playing on Monday and Tuesday, the Lancers played their opening round today, and Abigail Sheldon led the way on the Par 72, 6,171-yard course at the Brickyard Golf Club.
 
Sheldon is tied for fourth in the 63-player field, helping the Lancers finish the day tied for sixth in the 10-team field.
 
NOTABLE RESULTS:
 
The Lancers, despite not having the opportunity to complete a practice round, got off to a strong start and led the field early.
 
The team sits one shot back of fifth, two shots back of fourth and only six shots from third.
 
Sheldon fired a two-over 74 to end the day tied for fourth. She had a trio of birdies in the round, and she added 10 pars as well while shooting nothing worse than a bogey.
 
Aine Martin, meanwhile, is tied for 23^rd with a five-over 77. She was at her best early and late in the round, posting six straight pars and closing the round with three pars and a birdie while playing as an individual.
 
Breanna Hoese carded a seven-over 79 to tie for 29^th. She had a pair of birdies.
 
Ester Choi finished with an 80 (+8), and Chiara Wippert shot an 81 (+9). Hannah Wang carded an 82 (+10).
 
WHAT THEY SAID:
 
"It's been an interesting first round, mainly because we didn't get to play a practice round with the incoming storms," said Longwood Head Coach Megan Weaver. "This course has some unique holes, so it was just as much a learning opportunity as a competition. We finally broke our trend by coming out strong in the first five to seven holes where we led the field! We had a hard time with speed control on the greens, so that will be our biggest opportunity for Tuesday."
