HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Longwood men's golf certainly opened the 2024-25 season with a bang. The Lancers notched their lowest 54-hole score in team history, posting a 13-under 839 over three rounds at the Joe Feaganes Invitational.
Scott Jordan led the way with a third-place finish, and he helped Longwood erase a three-stroke hole to claim second place out of 13 teams—behind only the tournament hosts, Marshall.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
The Lancers were strong up and down the lineup, with their top four finishers scoring even or better over 54 holes.
The result allowed the team score of 278-279-282—839 (-13) to break the previous record, set in 2021 at the Elon Phoenix Invitational, by four strokes.
Jordan tied for the seventh-lowest raw score in team history with a 69-68-70—207 (-6). On a final day that saw the course tighten up, he finished one under.
Jordan tied for third, his best finish as a Lancer in a team tournament, to lead three Lancers in the top 15 and under par.
Nick Fleming closed the tournament with back-to-back-to-back rounds below par in his Longwood debut, carding a 69-70-70—209 (-4). He tied for 10
th in the process.
Justin LaRue was Longwood's biggest climber on the day, when he posted the lowest round on the team with a 69. He moved up seven spots into a tie for 13
th with a three-round tally of 71-70-69—210 (-3).
Hunter Swidzinski wrapped up his Longwood debut inside the top 25 after finishing tied for 23
rd. The freshman finished the tournament at even par, carding a 69-71-73—213 (E).
Both
David LaFreniere and
Zane Moore each tied for 39
th, as every Lancer who played finished in the top half of the 86-player field.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"I'm really happy with how our guys fought today," said Longwood Head Coach
Kevin Fillman. "As the scoring showed, it was a more difficult test than the previous two rounds. We knew we had a good battle going on with both Morehead State and Cleveland State down the stretch. The fact that we were able to answer that challenge will be beneficial for us sometime in the future."
"I'm very happy for Scott," Fillman added. "He came out and posted three under-par numbers right out of the gate, and, hopefully, that sets him up to have a fantastic final season. Honestly, everybody did a good job of doing his job, so, overall, it made it a really good week. We certainly have a lot we can do better—namely make more putts—but it is a nice way to start the year."
