CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Longwood freshmen
Matthew Lyons and
David LaFreniere have been named Big South Conference Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively, in men's golf, the league announced Friday.
Playing as individuals in The Manor Invite, hosted by Hampden-Sydney, Lyons took medalist honors at 6-under-par 138 and LaFreniere tied for fourth overall with a 3-over 145. Lyons posted consecutive rounds under par in the March 16-17 event with the help of two eagles and six birdies at the par 72, 6,643-yard Farmville, Va., course.
Lyons fired a 4-under 68 in the opening round, following it with a 2-under 70 to win the title by two over Peter Malia of Methodist. LaFreniere posted 70 and 75, tying with Methodist's Charlie Campbell.
The conference weekly honors are the first of the career for both Lyons and LaFreniere.
Longwood returns to action Monday and Tuesday at William & Mary's Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate.
