Lancers Place Two in Top 50 in Deep Field

RICHMOND, Va. – Longwood men's golf wrapped up the first day of the Giles-Spradley Collegiate 13th on Monday evening.

Amid a deep, 14-team field that features five teams in the top 100 of the national rankings, the Lancers placed two players in the top 50 of the field at the Par 72 course at Independence Golf Club.

NOTABLES RESULTS:

Longwood opened with a solid 289 and followed it up with a 294 for a two-round total of 583 (+7) to finish two strokes out of the top 10.

The Lancers are one stroke behind both Jacksonville and North Florida and two behind East Carolina, who is 10th. The Lancers are also three strokes back of James Madison in ninth and four back of Delaware in eighth.

Hunter Swidzinski led the way on the day with a 70-74—144 (E). Swidzinski was two-under in his opening round by firing a trio of birdies and an eagle, and he followed it up with three birdies in his second round to finish the day tied for 28th.

David Lafreniere posted a 71-76—147 (+3) to finish the day tied for 47th. He opened with four birdies in his first 18 holes, and he added two more birdies in round two.

Cameron Hardison finished the day tied for 53rd after posting the best second-round score on the team. He carded a 77-71—148 (+4) on the day. After a trio of birdies in his first round, he had four birdies and 11 pars in round two to climb up 16 spots in the standings.

Gabriel Mainelly also tied Hardison in 53rd with the same total score, but in reverse order. The freshman opened with a 71 thanks to three birdies and 13 pars, and he closed with a 77 to finish with a 71-77—148 (+4).

Matthew Hartley moved up nine spots with a strong bounce-back effort in the second round to tie for 66th. He posted a 78-73—151 (+7). After two birdies in his first round, he had two more birdies to go with an eagle in round two.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"There were definitely times when we had a few guys playing some pretty good golf," said Longwood Head Coach Kevin Fillman. "It's unfortunate that we couldn't get everybody playing well at the same time. Honestly, we just put the ball into too many spots where making bogey was just about the score that we could make.

"Every team here has conference championship and NCAA Tournament aspirations, so it's a deep field," Fillman added. "We still have an opportunity to beat some really good teams. To do so, we're going to have to be ready to play out of the gate in the morning."
