GREENSBORO, N.C. – Breanna Hoese got on a roll in round two and never stopped on Monday at the UNCG Collegiate.
Hoese posted a 68, the best round of the season for the team, for the Lancers as Longwood sits in sixth out of nine teams through two rounds.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
Hoese stole the show with her second round effort, ripping off five birdies and having nothing worse than a bogey during the 18-hole stretch. The last 68 for the Lancers came in 2013-14 when Amanda Steinhagen posted a 68 at the Lady Pirate Collegiate in October, 2013.
For Hoese, her four-under card in round two propelled her up the leaderboard, tying her for 11
th. She opened with a 76 for a two-round score of 76-68—144 (E). She sits one stroke back of a five-way tie for sixth.
The Lancers, sit three shots back of North Carolina A&T and Winthrop, who are tied for third. Longwood is also one shot back of Marshall, who is fifth.
Both
Chiara Wippert and
Abigail Sheldon are right behind her following consistent rounds from the Lancer freshman. Wippert opened with a 74 before shaving a stroke off with a second-round 73. She was incredibly consistent in round two with 13 pars and a pair of birdies.
That came after she shook off a slower start to round one and closed her final nine holes one under par.
Sheldon's story was much the same. She carded a two-over 74 to open the round. She too shook off a slow start to go one-under on the back nine. For her second round, she fired five birdies on her way to a one-over 73.
Ester Choi sits tied for 39
th through two rounds with a 77-78—155 (+11), and
Hannah Wang is 51
st following a 79-89—168 (+24).
WHAT THEY SAID:
"We got off to a rough start, which is unlike us," said Longwood Head Coach
Megan Weaver. "The greens here are massive, and most of them have a significant false front. The key to scoring is being in the right region of the green. We started off missing short, leaving long, difficult chips over the false fronts. Then we over-compensated and started overshooting the pin, leading to three-putts. The positives are that we had self-compassion and really turned it around. We were 12-over for the first nine holes, but we played the last 27 holes at six-over! What a comeback!"
"Bre played lights out in the second round with a 68," Weaver added. "Abigail and Chiara both had two solid rounds today. We finished three strokes from third place. Hopefully we take this positive momentum into round three!"
