BURLINGTON, N.C. – Justin LaRue continued his strong fall season and posted a top 10 finish through two rounds at the Elon Phoenix Invitational. The Lancers were tied for sixth out of 16 teams at the Alamance Country Club.
 
For LaRue, he was five under in his second round to finish the day tied for ninth out of 95 golfers.
 
The Lancers also had multiple individuals comopete in the VSGA Intercollegiate Championship at The Manor Golf Club.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
The Lancers hovered around the top five throughout the day as teams posted low scores throughout the event. As has become common under head coach Kevin Fillman, the Lancers shaved off two strokes between their first and second round scores. The team is two shots back of fifth and five shots back of fourth place.
 
LaRue highlighted that by posting a five-under 66 in the second round. The Lancer junior was tied for the fifth best scoring average on Par 3s, where he was even. He also had an eagle and tied for the second-most pars on the course with 27.
 
Rakes came out strong with an opening round 69 before finishing even on the day after a 73 in round two. He was even, on average, on Par 4s during the two rounds.
 
Zane Moore shooke off a tough opening round with the team's second-lowest round of the day, a 68, in round two. He had six birdies in his second round.
 
Scott Jordan posted a solid one-under round to open the day, and David LaFreniere had a 72 in the opening round.
 
Among the individuals competing at The Manor, Matthew Lyons was tied for sixth after one round. Cameron Hardison was one shot back, and Willie Hoover and Logan Hooper also posted top 20 rounds on the day.
 
WHAT THEY SAID:
 
"Today was an up-and-down day," said Fillman. "We went through a couple good stretches where we made a few putts, but, for much of the rounds, we just didn't make a whole lot. When the field is making a lot of birdies, it's difficult to keep pace when we're not making as many."
 
"Nick made a few this morning, and Justin and Zane did the same this afternoon," Fillman added. "We just didn't hole many putts in the other rounds. While the surfaces here can be tricky, there's also times like today when putts just don't seem to drop for whatever reason. I believe we played better than we scored. Hopefully, we'll be able to get in the hole a little better tomorrow and try to move up the board as far as we can."

The Lancers play the third and final round tomorrow morning, Tuesday.
