Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. – Mount St. Mary's attacking trio of Jordan Butler, Beanie Colson and Alayna Pagnotta combined for 11 goals and 16 points, as the Mountaineers ran past Longwood to 17-6 Wednesday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium.
Butler scored three of her four goals in an opening half that saw Mount St. Mary's (6-2) open a 7-2 lead less than 24 minutes in. Colson scored all three of her goals in the second half while Pagnotta came off the bench to score four goals, one assist to lead a Mount St. Mary's team that matched its second-highest scoring total of the season en route to its third consecutive win.
The Mountaineers were able to overcome a two-goal performance from Longwood's
Kaitlin Luccarelli and
Emma Johnson, as the Lancers (2-7) drop their fourth straight game coming off a pair of games decided by two or less goals, including Sunday's 11-9 loss at Old Dominion.
"Simply put, we lacked the energy, intensity, and focus we needed today to play against a good team," said Longwood head coach
Elaine Jones. "The sharpness, enthusiasm, communication and intensity we displayed for the ODU game a couple days ago was nowhere to be found today. Although we should be able to come back from a tough loss like that, it's easier said than done. I think mentally no one made the quick turnaround leap. We weren't all present and ready to play another challenging opponent, and unfortunately, it showed."
The multi-goal game for Luccarelli marks the seventh of the season for the 40-goal scorer from a season ago, as she led Longwood with four shots. Johnson finishes with her fourth multi-goal game, extending a three-game goal streak.
In goal, Jilian Pitito made four saves on 12 Longwood shots while playing all 60 minutes to earn the win.
Laura O'Toole got the start for the Lancers between the pipes and took the loss, allowing 13 goals and making six saves. She was relieved by
Danielle Burke, who made three saves and allowed four goals.
After playing three straight games on the road, the Lancers will return to Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field Saturday, March 23 to host East Carolina. The opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
