FARMVILLE, Va. – After striking out 13 batters in a complete game shutout to clinch Longwood's sweep over UNC Asheville Saturday, Lancer sophomore right-handed pitcher Tyler Morgan has been named Big South Pitcher of the Week, picking up the second weekly conference award for a Lancer this season.
 
A 5-foot-9 starter from Ashland, Va., Morgan was historically good in his outing Saturday, picking up Longwood's first complete game shutout since Aaron Myers posted 9.0 scoreless innings against Ohio University in 2014. Morgan allowed just five base runners in the 5-0 Lancer win, holding UNC Asheville to three singles and two walks. Morgan's baker's dozen of strikeouts fell one shy of the program record of 14, which has been done three times before, including Friday when Steven Farkas matched the program record in 7.0 scoreless innings.
 
Morgan began the year as a relief pitcher and had made four midweek starts in his career before being inserted into the weekend rotation against High Point on March 18. After suffering an injury at Winthrop March 24 and missing one turn in the rotation, Morgan returned to the weekend rotation against Radford on April 8. The outing against UNC Asheville was the first career quality start for Morgan.
 
The weekly award is the sixth for a Longwood pitcher and 10th overall for a Lancer. Morgan becomes the first Longwood pitcher to pick up a weekly award since Eric Harp collected Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week on March 5. In 2017 Cody Wager won Big South Pitcher of the Week twice and Antwaun Tucker was twice named Big South Freshman of the Week.
 
Longwood continues its seven-game homestand this week, hosting James Madison Tuesday before welcoming in Campbell for a weekend set. Longwood's game against JMU is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday and will air on the Big South Network.
