CHARLESTON, S.C. – Longwood baseball took an early lead against The Citadel in the second game of a three-game series between the two sides, but the Bulldogs (14-15) pushed past the Lancers (18-13) 8-4 behind a middle-inning surge.

Tre Keels homered, and
Brogan Jones scored twice and drove in a run for the Lancers while recording his 11
th multi-hit game of the season. But The Citadel offense was a tough out throughout the day and racked up 13 hits while scoring in five innings to take the series.

For the 19
th time this season, Longwood scored in the first inning to take an early lead. Jones came home on a
Jae'dan Carter sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

The Citadel answered in the second and tied the score at one apiece on a sacrifice fly from Garrett Fulmer.
Â
Jones singled in the third and came around to score on a wild pitch a few batters later for a 2-1 lead, but The Citadel offense was on a roll. The Bulldogs scored in four straight innings, although the Lancer pitching staff limited the damage in each instance. However, the additive effect gave the home side a 6-2 lead through five innings.

Jones drove in a run with an RBI single in the seventh, and Longwood loaded the bases down 6-3. However, Trip Brown came on in relief and got out of the jam to preserve three-run lead.

The Citadel extended the lead to 8-3 on a two-run home run by Zach Hunt in the bottom of the seventh.

Keels swatted a solo homer, his fifth home run of the season, with one out in the ninth to trim the lead to 8-4, but Brown was able to finish the game off two batters later.

Michael Gibson (3-1) earned the win after striking out five in five innings of work. He walked one and gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits. Brown picked up the save by tossing the final 2.1 innings. He gave up one run on one hit and one walk while striking out one.

Braydon Gray (0-2) took the loss for Longwood. He gave up five runs, four earned, on eight hits and a walk in 3.2 innings of work.
