Straight-Set Wins Fuel Lancer 7-0 Dispatch

Longwood Handles North Carolina A&T In Saturday Showdown

FARMVILLE, Va. – One week after collecting another milestone win, Longwood men's tennis didn't skip a beat in their return to the court.

Backed by straight-set wins on each singles court and a sweep in doubles play, the Lancers dispatched North Carolina A&T 7-0 Saturday, improving their home record to 4-1 winning the past four decisions.

Saturday's impressive showing extended the Lancers' win streak to four, a new season high.

"Today was a great match for us to start working on the things that we'll need in order to win tomorrow, as well as keeping our confidence high," said first-year head coach Jhonnatan Medina Alvarez.

Sophomore ace Amadeo Blasco continued his hot streak as he handled Dreshaun Jarmon 6-1, 6-2, extending his win streak to a team-high six. Saturday's win also pushed Blasco into a tie for the most singles wins by a player in a single season, breaking even with four-year standout Nobu Tanaka at 23 victories.

Meanwhile on court No. 2, reigning Big South Freshman of the Week Valentin Popescu backed his accolade with a pair of 6-4 wins over his Aggie counterpart.

A native of Bucharest, Romania, Popescu pushed his win streak to four as he made his first appearance in the second spot of the rotation since a Feb. 28 home bout with Liberty.

Following in the footsteps of his fellow freshman, Raisei Sakai collected a 6-1, 6-3 win at court No. 3 for his third win over the past four matches. The straight-set win gave Sakai his fourth win at the third slot, the most wins at any spot in the rotation for the freshman.

Already a top five all-time wins player, Julian Farthing added to his career mark behind a 6-1, 6-2 victory at court No. 4. The straight-set victory was his fourth consecutive such decision as he collected career win No. 51 – good for fourth in the program's record book.

Senior Jorge Godoy's 6-1, 6-3 decision pushed his win total to 13, a career-best after collecting 10 in his Lancer debut last season. A native of Valencia, Spain, Godoy brought his spring record back even at 6-6 with four wins at court No. 5 and a 2-2 season at the sixth spot.

Freshman Daniel Hernandez became the sixth Lancer with to reach the 10-win milestone this season, doing so with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over counterpart Jordan Lawrence. Hernandez's win gives Longwood a starting lineup with 10 wins among each player – Blasco (23), Farthing (16), Popescu (14), Godoy (13), Sakai (12) and Hernandez (10).

The Lancers continue their lengthy homestand Sunday as Big South power Winthrop comes to town for a noon showdown. Sunday's conference clash kicks off the back end of Longwood's eight-match home stretch as they're off to a 4-0 start with two sweeps and their first Big South win of the season – a 5-2 decision over Gardner-Webb.

"As a team, we understand that regardless of the level of our opponent, our job description is to fight for every point and to take important points," Medina Alvarez said. "I'm really happy and looking forward to tomorrow. It's going to be a huge match for the school and the program. I know my guys are ready to battle. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do."

First serve Sunday is set for 12 p.m. from Lancer Courts.
