DAVIDSON, N.C. — Junior Marko Mrdak and sophomore Rodrigo Guijarro each went unbeaten in singles play to lead the Longwood men's tennis team at the Davidson Invitational on the Davidson Tennis Courts over the weekend.
The teammates advanced to the final in flight 2, but did not not play each other in that round. Mrdak and Guijarro, instead, faced flight 3 finalists Mateo Berne and Martin Cozar Gimenez, respectively, both from Catawba. Mrdak, a native of Perth, Australia, won, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 11-9, while Guijarro, of Zaragoza, Spain, won 6-0, 4-6, 10-8.
Mrdak opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Davidson's Nico Carneiro before defeating UNC Asheville's Adam Duda 7-5, 7-5.
Guijarro defeated UNC Asheville's Harrison Cooper 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 and Davidson's Kai Villagomez 4-6, 6-1, 14-12 to reach the final match.
Daniel Borisov went 2-1 in flight 1. He defeated Catawba's Luca Bergonzi 5-7, 6-4, 10-7, followed by a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Asheville's Jip Mens. Borisov's lone loss came against the Bulldogs' Cian Ingles, 7-6 (3), 6-4, in the flight 1 final.
Marc Ferrando picked up one singles victory, defeating Queens' Jan Montero Diaz 7-5, 3-6, 10-8.
John Felts also recorded two wins on the weekend, beating Davidson's Aidan Hernandez 6-0, 6-3 and Daniel Cowan Jr. 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.
In doubles, Orry Farnworth and Mrdak went 2-1 in flight 2, defeating Davidson's Nikhil Mukherjee and Connor Cole 6-3 and Asheville's Duda and Mens 6-1. The pair fell in the final, 6-2 to Alen Bill and Emil Remsted of Catawba.
Ferrando and Guijarro earned a 6-3 victory over Davidson's Villagomez and Davide Procacci in flight 1.
Gustav Facchini and Felts split two matches in flight 3, defeating Davidson's Charlie Ratliff and Hernandez 7-6 (10-8).
Longwood is 35-20 (.636) in singles and 15-9 (.625) in doubles through three events this fall.
The Lancers are back in action Oct. 8-12 in the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship at Virginia Tech's Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
