FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood team captain
Damarion Geter will embark on a two-week trip to East Asia as part of an international tour with the Athletes in Action program in August.
After training with his Longwood teammates on campus this summer, Geter, a redshirt senior forward and fourth-year team captain, will spend the remainder of his offseason visiting four regions in East Asia where he will take part in mission work with fellow collegiate men's basketball players on the AIA USA Eagles squad.
As part of the trip, which runs from Aug. 1-14, Geter and his AIA squad will also take the court for seven basketball games against local teams, including several from the professional basketball leagues.
Geter is one of 10 players on the AIA's USA Eagles roster, joining fellow collegians Aleks Abrams (Cal Poly), Grant Benzinger (Wright State), Brandon Childress (Wake Forest), Robert Franks (Washington State), T.J. Holyfield (Stephen F. Austin), Christian Keeling (Charleston Southern), Fletcher Magee (Wofford), Kahron Ross (Lehigh) and Ryan Welage (San Jose State).
"We're excited for Geter to be a part of such a transformative experience," said fifth-year head coach
Jayson Gee, who signed Geter as part of his first Longwood recruiting class in 2013. "We firmly believe in developing the total person in our program, and that extends well beyond what we do on the basketball court.
"I know how positively our team's service trip to the Dominican Republic in 2015 affected Geter and the rest of our team, and this will be another opportunity for him to get outside of his comfort zone and grow as a person. And when you talk about representing not just Longwood basketball, but Longwood University on an international stage, Geter is one of the best this school can offer."
Geter, a 6-8, 230-pound forward from Dayton, Ohio, has captained the Lancers since his sophomore year. The longest-tenured Lancer on Longwood's 2017-18 squad, Geter has overcome significant injuries over the past two seasons to return for a fifth year of eligibility in 2017-18.
Geter is already familiar with the Athletes in Action program after spending a portion of the 2016 summer at the AIA Captain's Academy, a week-long retreat for collegiate men's basketball captains aimed at enhancing their leadership abilities through a range of programming and prominent guest speakers.
A two-year starter, Geter has played in 69 games during his Longwood career despite missing the entire 2015-16 season with a shoulder injury, and all but three games of the 2016-17 season after suffering a broken foot. Now entering his fifth season in Farmville, Geter owns career averages of 22.5 minutes, 2.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game, along with a .555 career field goal percentage.
