  • Longwood entered the season picked to finish fifth in the Big South. The Lancers had a program-best second-place finish in conference in 2016, highlighted by 32 wins, the record in the Division I record.

  • Alex Lewis was named first team all-region (ABCA East) and all-state (VaSID) after his strong 2016 season.

Scouting George Mason
  • Longwood meets George Mason for the 17th time Wednesday. This is the second straight season the Lancers and Patriots have met. George Mason won in Fairfax, Va., with George Mason taking the game, 13-6.
  • The Patriots enter the season off a 12th-place finish in the Atlantic 10.
  • George Mason enters the week after going winless in four games at the Caravelle Resort Tournament. The Patriots played tough against No. 18 Coastal Carolina in its final game of the tournament, outhitting the Chanticleers 12-8, but falling 9-8 in walk-off fashion.
  • George Mason took an 8-0 lead in the fourth inning before Coastal Carolina climbed back into the game by scoring nine straight runs over the final five innings of the game.
  • Junior outfielder Tyler Nelin won A-10 co-player of the week honors for the week starting 2/13 and is hitting .345 with a team-best three home runs and 11 RBI through the first seven games. Nelin went deep with a two-run blast Sunday against Coastal Carolina.
  • Freshman catcher Logan Driscoll is hitting .357 through the first seven games of the season with a team-best nine runs scored. Driscoll won conference freshman of the week honors for the first week of the season. Driscoll is from Burke, Va., the same hometown as Alex Lewis.
