ANNAPOLIS, Md. – All of the domination from Longwood men's tennis was bound to lead to two Lancers facing each other at some point.
That happened Saturday.
After a 14-2 record on Friday in the opening rounds of the Navy Gold Invitational, Longwood men's tennis kept winning Saturday as three players will compete for a singles title while the duo of
Amadeo Blasco/
Raisei Sakai will look for a doubles championship Sunday morning.
The tandems of Blasco/Sakai and
Arthur Bardellotto/
Julian Farthing faced off in the semifinals of doubles action with Blasco/Sakai taking a hard-fought 7-5 decision. With the loss, Bardellotto/Farthing will take on fellow Lancers
Valentin Popescu/
Jorge Godoy in the third-place match Sunday.
In singles play, Blasco continued his winning ways with a perfect 2-0 Saturday with straight-set wins over Jackson Wood from Mount St. Mary's (6-4, 6-1) and Andrew Ton of Navy (6-4, 6-4). The two victories pushed the sophomore into the Flight A singles title match Sunday, one of three singles players in a championship match slated for tomorrow.
The other two Lancers in title bouts – Bardellotto and Farthing – will go head-to-head for bragging rights in Flight B. Bardellotto handled his business with two straight-set wins, the first over Binghamton's Josh Druger by a 6-0, 6-1 margin, and the second via a 6-1, 6-2 dominant win versus Princeton's Eduardo Paz. Meanwhile, Farthing collected a 6-3, 6-4 win against Binghamton's Sebastian Quiros before taking down Greg Durham of Navy via a 6-3, 6-2 score.
Sunday's guaranteed Lancer victory in Flight B singles will be the third flight title for the men's squad this fall after the tandem of Bardellotto and Farthing teamed up for a win at the UNCW Fall Invitational while Blasco took home a singles final at the Liberty Invitational.
Overall, the Lancers picked up 15 wins Saturday pushing their two-day total to 29 combined victories. Of those 29 victories, 19 have come in singles play with all 19 coming in two-set sweeps.
Action picks back up Sunday morning as impending weather may shorten the tournament schedule to just championship and consolation final matches to be played.
