LYNCHBURG, Va. - Following their three-win opening round Friday, Longwood men's tennis picked up three more from the trio of
Amadeo Blasco,
Raisei Sakai and
Valentin Popescu as part of a 3-2 Saturday.
In just his second tournament action as a Lancer, freshman lefty Popescu battled for his second three-set win in as many days, this time taking down No. 17 seed Christopher Fletcher from George Washington in a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 comeback. The win pushes Popescu into the Round of 32 and leaves him just one win from the quarterfinals.
Joining Popescu in the Round of 32 is reigning Big South Freshman of the Year Amadeo Blasco, who handled his Penn State counterpart, Peter Beaty, in straight 6-3 sets. Saturday's win gives Blasco an 8-1 record in singles play with at least two wins in each tournament he's participated in this fall.
The Lancers' third win of the day came in doubles action as Blasco and newcomer Sakai teamed up for an 8-4 trouncing of La Salle's duo of Rogelio Gonzalez and Connor Merrill, but the win was short-lived as the Lancer tandem fell in the quarterfinals to Old Dominion's No. 5 seeded Jannik Giesse and Adam Moundir 8-2.
After punching his ticket into the Round of 64, Sakai fell to Temple's No. 17 seed Alberto Caceres Saturday in a 6-4, 6-4 straight-set decision, rounding out Longwood's afternoon.
In the Round of 32, which is slated for Sunday, sophomore sensation Blasco is scheduled to tangle with Big South foe Rodrigo Magalhaes from Radford at 9 a.m. while Popescu looks to continue his winning ways in his short time with the Lancers against No. 9 seeded Jacob Nicolussi at 9 a.m.
