By The Numbers
  • Longwood trailed by five runs to VMI in the win 3/30, but rallied twice, including for four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game. The five-run deficit was the largest for the Lancers in a game they went on to win.
  • Longwood was tied or trailing in the seventh inning of each game against Savannah State and won a pair of one-run games. The Lancers are 11-3 in one-run games and have five walk-off wins.
  • The Lancers have won more often than not when the other team scores first, posting a 17-11 record when the other team brings in the first run of the game. Longwood has three wins when trailing in the seventh inning.
  • Jr. 3B Alex Lewis has set career highs in virtually every single offensive category. In the Big South, Lewis is eighth with 40 RBI and third in the conference with 17 doubles. In Big South play Lewis leads the team with a .377 average (29-for-77).
  • So. UTL Sammy Miller has been money as the lead-off man. Miller reaches base at a rate of .442 when leading off an inning, and leads the Lancers with 34 walks and 38 runs scored. Miller is fourth in the Big South in steals (16) and is fourth in walks. The Lancers are 26-15 with Miller in the lead-off spot. Miller was out of the lead-off spot at Norfolk State, batting seventh, and was 2-for-3, scoring three runs.
  • So. LHP Michael Catlin has been strong out of the bullpen for Longwood, posting 4.0 innings of scoreless ball in two outings against Asheville.
  • Longwood has has a number of "clutch" hits from a number of guys in 2016. C.J. Roth is hitting .409 (18-for-44) with a runner in scoring position. With a man on third with less than two outs Alex Lewis has picked up 13 RBI in 19 opportunities. With two outs, Connar Bastaich is hitting .324 (22-for-68), which has led to a team-best 17 RBI with two outs.

  • The Longwood bullpen has done its job picking up a conference-leading 17 saves on the season. Of 150 inherited baserunners only 56 have scored.
  • Jr. RHP Ryan Jones has stranded a team-high 27 of 31 inherited baserunners. Two of the four inherited runners to score against Jones were the man from third base when the right-handed junior stepped into the game with the bases loaded.

Scouting Duke
  • The Lancer-Blue Devil rivalry goes back to 1980 and the teams will meet for the 13th time of the season Tuesday. Longwood and Duke have played four times in the last two years, all coming at Jack Coombs Field. The Lancers will play at Durham Bulls Athletic Park for the first time in the Division I era Tuesday,
Longwood's game Tuesday makes it three consecutive years Longwood and Duke have met on the field.
  • Duke enters the game off three consecutive wins, the last a 13-4 win to sweep a doubleheader of Gardner-Webb. Jimmy Herron (3-for-4), Chris Proctor (4-for-5), Peter Zyla (2-for-5), Chris Perez (2-for-5), and Evan Dougherty (2-for-2 off the bench) all lit it up with multi-hit games for Duke in the second game. The Blue Devils had 17 hits in the win and had eight extra-base hits.
  • Jimmy Herron has played in every game for Duke and is second with a .319 average.
  • Jack Labosky is the top power threat, leading the team with six home runs, 16 doubles, and 39 RBI.
  • Projected starter Bailey Clark is 4-4 with a 5.92 ERA in nine starts, 13 total appearances.
  • Longwood lost 5-2 at Duke in 2015, a night game at Jack Coombs Field. Connar Bastaich was 2-for-4 in the game, but a big 2-for-4 game from Chris Perez including a two-run home run in the first inning proved to be too much for Longwood. A pair of two-run hits in the game were the difference.
