ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Longwood men's tennis season came to a close Saturday morning, as the Lancers fell, 4-1, to the hands of eighth-seeded Gardner-Webb at the Asheville Raquet Club. The loss ends a five-match win streak and concludes the season with a 8-16 record, a six-win improvement from a season ago.

Gardner-Webb won the doubles point by taking the matches on courts one and three. At the No. 1 position, the Runnin' Bulldog pair of Nikita Zverkov and Ernest Alberch defeated the Longwood tandem of Steed Johnson and Dan Elston, 8-4. Meanwhile, Jonathon Walker and Dan Hogan took the match at the No. 3 position, 8-7, over Rosen Ilchev and Bharani Sankar.

Florian Uffer and Alfonso Castellano were down a break in their doubles match on court two against the Gardner-Webb duo of Korhan Ates and Yaroslav Prostakov, before the match was left unfinished, 7-5.

Elston won his sixth conference match of the season over Zverkov atop the singles lineup, 6-3, 6-3. The win marks the fifth straight for Elston, as he concludes his final dual season with a 14-5 record.

However, Gardner-Webb took three matches in straight sets to complete the victory. The Runnin' Bulldogs captured the first completed singles match, as Sankar dropped his match at the No. 5 position against Prostakov, 6-1, 6-2.

Ates added a victory from the No. 4 spot in the order, as he defeated Uffer, 6-4, 6-2. Gardner-Webb's Brendon Dempsey sealed the win for the Runnin' Bulldogs from the No. 6 position, as he defeated Rosen Ilchev, 6-4, 6-4.

Castellano dropped the first set of his match at the No. 2 position against Kaszas, 6-4, but was up a break in the second set, 4-2, before the match was left unfinished. Johnson won the first set of his match on court three, 7-5, and was up, 1-0, in the second set, before the match was left unfinished.

Gardner-Webb moves on to face top overall seed Coastal Carolina in the tournament quarterfinals Sunday.

The loss against the Runnin' Bulldogs concludes the season for the Lancers, as the squad returns six student-athletes for the 2015-16 season.
