Lancers Suffer Pair of Defeats at Mary Washington

Longwood Drops 6-1 Decisions to Christopher Newport and Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – In its second day of action in the spring season, the Longwood men's tennis team dropped a pair of 6-1 decisions on Saturday. The Lancers fell to Christopher Newport in the day's first matchup before being bested by host Mary Washington in the nightcap.

Longwood vs. Christopher Newport

In the first match of the day, the Lancers couldn't maintain the momentum from a strong start and fell to Christopher Newport. Longwood jumped out early taking the top doubles matchup as the duo of Daniel Elston and Steed Johnson cruised to an 8-3 victory over Justin Cerny and David Reed.

Christopher Newport rebounded quickly by taking the remaining two doubles matchups on courts two and three and claiming the doubles point. In the No. 2 doubles pairing, the Lancers' duo of Alfonso Castellano and Florian Uffer narrowly fell, 8-6, to Steven Boslet and Chiraag Shetty. Likewise, in the final doubles match, the Bharani Sankar and Rosen Ilchev tandem dropped an 8-3 decision on court three leaving the Lancers down a point heading into singles.

Longwood started off singles play in solid fashion with Elston claiming the top matchup over David Reed (6-3, 7-5). Beyond the top spot though, it was all Christopher Newport, who would reel off the final five matches to claim the 6-1 victory.

In the second spot, Florian Uffer battled hard, splitting sets with Boslet before eventually falling in a decisive tiebreaker (4-6, 6-3, 3-6). Longwood's three and four seeds, Castellano and Johnson, also fell in tiebreakers to Shetty (5-7, 6-4, 9-11) and Cerny (4-6, 7-5, 9-11), respectively.

In the five spot, Sankar dropped straight sets to Artuu Fiva (1-6, 1-6) before Lachlan Manser became the fourth Lancer to fall in tiebreaks, this time to Max Katcher, 6-1, 6-7 (8-6).

Longwood vs. Mary Washington

In the nightcap, the Lancers struggled once again as Mary Washington swept the doubles matchups and captured the momentum early. Elston and Johnson were dealt a 3-8 defeat at the hands of Tyler Carey and Evan Charles. The Eagles dispatched Longwood's second and third pairings by identical 4-8 scores as Castellanos and Uffer along with Sankar and Ilchev could not get Longwood on the board.

Singles play found the Lancers struggling once more, as Dan Elston dropped his match at the top spot to Carey (6-1, 6-3) and Uffer fell 7-6 (3), 4-6, 4-10, to Stratton Gilmore. Johnson, Sanker and Manser also dropped their respective matches at four, five and six for the Lancers, giving Mary Washington six points.

The lone Lancer to pull a point in singles play was Alfonso Castellano, who defeated David Lunding-Johansson (7-5, 7-5). The hard-fought victory marked the first victory for the freshman Castellano as a Lancer.

The Lancers fall to 0-3 on the season after the pair of defeats. Longwood is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 15, at William & Mary for a dual match with the Tribe.
