FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood men's golf team received one of the highest academic honors in the collegiate golf community Tuesday when the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and Farmer's Insurance selected the Lancers for the 2014 Team Academic Award.
Â
This is the sixth consecutive season that Longwood has received the honor, which recognizes collegiate teams that achieve a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The Lancers have won the award every year since it was created in 2008-09.
Â
Longwood was one of three teams from the Big South on the GCAA list, joining Liberty and Winthrop. The academic citation comes on the heels of men's golf receiving the Longwood Cormier Award for Academic Excellence both semesters in 2013-14 for holding the highest team GPA of Longwood's athletics programs.
Â
Six letterwinners return for Longwood in 2014-15, including senior
Blake Carter who not only led the team with a 73.63 strokes-per-round average but also received a Longwood Scholar-Athlete award in 2013-14. The Lancers open the 2014 fall season at the Joe Feaganes Invitational, hosted by Marshall in Huntington, W.Va., on Sept. 8.
