HELLERTOWN, Pa. -- Freshman
Clayton Forren/Rustburg posted a score of 74-71--145 on Monday to lead the Longwood University men's golf team to a first-place score of 300-295--595 among 18 teams at the Lafayette Invitational hosted by Lafayette College of the Patriot League and played at the Silver Creek Country Club in Hellertown, Pennsylvania. Forren was the runner-up individually behind Chris Crawford of Drexel University, who took medalist honors among the field of 101 with his 73-71--144 at the 6,635-yard, par 71 layout. The Lancers will play again at the Coca Cola Invitational hosted Wofford College of the Southern Conference on April 14-15 at The Country Club of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Forren tied his collegiate-best for 36 holes (145) and was followed by sophomore
Alex O'Dell/Crozet (73-78--151, t-16th), along with juniors
Blake Carter/Bassett (79-73--152, t-19th) and
Jason Schumacher/Glen Allen (78-74--152, t-19th), as well as senior
Kyle Bodin/Austin, Texas (75-77--152, t-19th). The tournament victory was the first for the Lancers since the program won two events during the 2011-12 fall campaign (Bucknell, William and Mary).
"It's always great to win," said 17th-year Longwood head coach
Kevin Fillman. "It had been a while – two and a half years to be exact. That's a fact we were all very aware of. We kind of got spoiled there for a few years and maybe forgot how hard it is to win college golf tournaments. Like I told them afterwards, I'm really happy for our players. They're the ones who put the work in, and they deserve to reap some rewards. The most important thing from my end was that we had to play some shots down the stretch that meant something. That experience will certainly help us as we head to Wofford and the Big South Championships."
Longwood led the field in par 4 scoring (4.26, +29), tied for first in par 3 scoring (3.22, +9) and eagles (1), was second in pars (107), tied for second in birdies (17) and tied for seventh in par 5 scoring (5.13, +4). Forren tied for first in eagles (1). Schumacher tied for fourth in birdies (5). O'Dell tied for sixth in pars (24).
Longwood was followed in the top five by Central Connecticut State (598), Hofstra (601), Bucknell (609), along with Drexel (610) and La Salle (610).
