Longwood Set to Host Campbell in Big South Championship Quarterfinal Round

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University women's lacrosse team has received the No. 3 seed for the 2014 Big South Conference Championship, as announced Sunday by the league. The squad is slated to host No. 6 Campbell University in a quarterfinal match on Wednesday, April 30 beginning at 1 p.m.

The Lancers finished the 2014 regular season with an 8-9 overall record and a 5-2 mark in Big South games, while the Fighting Camels closed out the regular season at 7-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play. Longwood and Campbell met earlier this season in Farmville on April 13 when Longwood earned a 16-8 victory. Junior goalkeeper Chiristan Acker/Moorestown, N.J. logged a career-high 15 saves in that outing, while sophomore Katie McHugh/Burke paced the Lancers' offense with four goals and two assists for six total points. The two squads have only met twice all-time in the sport of women's lacrosse, as Longwood has claimed both decisions.

The top four seeds will host quarterfinal matches on Wednesday, April 30, with the winners advancing to the site of the No. 1 seed next weekend. Defending champion High Point finished the Big South season with a perfect 7-0 conference record to win the regular-season title for the first time and the right to serve as host of the semifinals and finals as the top overall seed. The Panthers will host No. 8 seed Presbyterian (0-7) in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m.

Davidson is the No. 2 seed for the championship, as the Wildcats went 6-1 in league play this season.  The Wildcats will host No. 7 seeded Liberty (1-6) at 6 p.m. Winthrop is the No. 4 seed following its 4-3 Big South campaign, and will host No. 5 seeded Coastal Carolina (3-4) at 2 p.m.

The quarterfinals and semifinals will be broadcast live on the Big South Network, while Sunday's Championship contest will be carried live on ESPN3 at 2 p.m.  The Big South champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship.
