RICHMOND, Va. – The Longwood University women's lacrosse team fell, 15-3, at in-state opponent the University of Richmond (5-4) on Sunday afternoon in its final non-conference matchup of the season. Junior

Katie McHugh/Burke each scored one goal apiece in the outing. Emily Doyle logged two goals and six assists for a game-high eight points to lead the Spiders to the victory. Longwood (3-7) will open its Big South Conference schedule on Friday, April 4 when the squad travels to Coastal Carolina University for a 6 p.m. tilt.
"We ran into a tough Richmond team today, but we have to put this loss behind us as we move onto our upcoming conference games," said head coach

The squads traded one goal apiece in the first three minutes of play, as Norwood found Arndt in front of the net for a shot on target at 27:50. The Spiders pulled away, however, with the next eight consecutive goals to take a 9-1 edge with 5:17 remaining in the first half. Butler ended the silence for the Lancers, collecting a pass from Norwood and firing a hard shot past the opposing keeper with just less three minutes to go in the period. However, Richmond scored once more in the waning minutes of the half on a free position shot, giving the home squad a 10-2 lead at the break.
Coming out of halftime, the Spiders controlled possession of the ball and pace of play, holding Longwood to just four shots in the period. Richmond found the back of the net four times in the second half, pulling away 14-2. McHugh and senior
Mary Barondess/Centreville connected for Longwood's lone goal of the period with just 1:22 remaining before Richmond struck once more and ran down the clock to take the 15-3 decision.
Sunday's contest marked the sixth meeting ever between Longwood and Richmond in the sport of women's lacrosse. The Spiders now hold a 1-5 advantage in the all-time series.
