Longwood Faces 15-4 Setback at Elon

Box Score

ELON, N.C. – The Longwood University women's lacrosse team faced a 15-4 setback at Elon University (4-5) on Wednesday evening in Elon, N.C. Five different Lancers recorded one point apiece in the decision, as four team members tallied one goal each and senior Lauren Prasnicki/Lexington notched the squad's lone assist of the outing. Anna Vitton and Sloane Kessler paced the Phoenix with five points apiece in the victory. Longwood (2-5) will return to action on Tuesday, March 25 when the squad hosts in-state opponent William and Mary in a 3 p.m. tilt at the Athletics Complex.

"Elon didn't do anything we weren't prepared for," said head coach Elaine Jones. "We just came out flat and didn't play very good lacrosse, which was pretty unfortunate."

The Phoenix jumped out to an early lead, scoring five unanswered goals in the first 11 minutes of play. Sophomore Katie McHugh/Burke put the Lancers on the board when she collected a pass from Prasnicki and fired a shot on goal with 12:26 remaining in the first half. Elon responded, however, with four more goals in the waning minutes of the half to take a 9-1 edge into the break.

The home squad continued to control the momentum coming out of halftime, increasing its buffer to double-digits at 12-1 with 25:34 left to play. In the next five minutes, junior Sara Jacobson/Gaineville and senior Mary Barondess/Centreville both found the back of the net to make the score 12-3 at 20:42. The Phoenix followed with two more goals of its own before sophomore Sarah Butler/Oakleigh South, Victoria, Australia tallied her lone goal of the day to cut the difference back to 10 at 14-4 with 10:33 to go. The squads played back-and-forth for the final 10 minutes of the contest, as Elon found the net once more with just over a minute to go, sealing the 15-4 decision.

Wednesday's contest marked the first meeting ever between Longwood and Elon in the sport of women's lacrosse.
