CHAPEL HILL, N.C. –The Longwood University men's tennis team faced a 7-0 setback against nationally ranked No. 11 North Carolina (13-2) on Monday evening at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Longwood (1-10) will return to the courts on Saturday, March 15, resuming Big South Conference action at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C. at 1:00 p.m.
"This was the best team we played all year and it showed," said head coach
Jakob Gustafsson. "It was a great experience for us. Looking forward, we will have no surprises and no chances of being overwhelmed. I am seeing improvements each match now and we plan on continuing with that. There are tough matches ahead, so we will focus on our games and efforts first, and make sure we improve as players and athletes as the season continues."
Two Lancers took on ranked opponents in singles play, as junior
Daniel Elston/ St. Austell, Cornwall, England was bested 6-1, 6-0 by No. 29 Ronnie Schneider at the No. 1 spot and senior
Edward Becker/Sydney, Australia fell to No. 47 Brett Clark 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. Junior
Steed Johnson/Ashokie, N.C. faced a 6-0, 6-0 setback at No. 3, while freshman
Warren Bryan/Greensboro, N.C. dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 4. The No. 5 and No. 6 positions were defeated as well, as sophomore classmates
Justin Higgs/Nassau, Bahamas (6-2, 6-1), and
Bharani Sankar/Glen Allen (6-0, 6-3) closed out singles action.
In doubles play, the Lancers completed two matches before the third went unfinished. Johnson and Bryan were beaten, 8-1, by Schnur and Clark at the No. 2 spot, while Higgs and Sankar were bested, 8-0, by Murray and Schnieder at No. 3. The No.1 duo of Becker and Elston was retired trailing 4-1.
