Lopez Three-Set Clincher Lifts Lancers at Presbyterian

Longwood beats Blue Hose, 4-3, for second consecutive season

CLINTON, S.C. — Daniel Lopez outlasted Presbyterian's Dario Navarro in three sets to lift the Longwood men's tennis team to a 4-3 victory in Big South Conference action won the Templeton Center Tennis Courts on Thursday.

With the dual knotted at 3-3, Lopez beat Navarro, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, to seal the victory. 

Longwood fell behind early, dropping the doubles point before rallying to win the first three matches to finishing in singles play.

The win marks just the Lancers' third all-time against PC, but second consecutive versus the Blue Hose. 

Presbyterian (9-6, 0-2 Big South) took doubles with wins on courts three and one, respectively. First, Thomas Anderson and Eduardo Valentin defeated Lopez and Alejandro Uribe, 6-3, prior to David Mamalat and Matija Samardzic topping Daniel Borisov and Timéo Puech by the same score.

Navarro and Daksh Prasad were 5-2 up on Marko Mrdak and Rufus Plane on court two when that match was halted. 

Uribe began singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Valentin at No. 6 to tie the dual, 1-1, Petter Lindquist followed, beating Gabriel Godoy by the same margin at No. 5 to give the Lancers the lead. Puech made it 3-1, defeating Mamalat, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 1. 

The Blue Hose then received victories from Samardzic over Borisov at No. 2, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, and Prasad over Plane at No. 3, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (8).

The Lancers improved to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in the league with the win, and sit second in the standings, a half match behind Gardner-Webb.

Longwood returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m., hosting Davidson.
