Longwood Falls to High Point at Big South Championship

Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior Jamie Brentlinger/Gambrills, Maryland logged two goals and two assists for a team-best four points, as the No. 3 seed Longwood University women's lacrosse team fell, 17-7, against No. 2 High Point University (9-8) in the semifinals of the inaugural Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting Friday at Richardson Stadium on the campus of Davidson College.  The Panthers advance to the title game on Sunday, April 28 to square off against No. 1 seed Davidson. The Lancers finished their 2013 campaign with a 10-8 overall record.

"Unfortunately we came out with a bit of nerves and we were a step behind to start the game," said head coach Elaine Jones. "High Point executed well and got us in a big hole early in the first half and we just never recovered. We did have some strong individual performances. Taylor O'Hara and Kathleen Battle worked nonstop on defense and Battle also turned in an outstanding performance in transition, while Jamie Brentlinger and Lauren Prasnicki had shining moments on offense. However, it wasn't enough, as we really needed everyone to make a difference today to be able to beat High Point.

"Although I'm not happy with the game, I am proud of our team for the effort they gave all year and the progress they made in so many areas from the fall through the spring season. We will keep this loss in the back of our minds and use it as fuel to return even stronger next year in competing for a Big South Conference Championship."

Brentlinger tallied four draw controls and two ground balls on the day, as well. Junior Lauren Prasnicki/Lexington added two goals and one assist for three points, while freshman Katie McHugh/Burke logged a pair of goals. Junior Mary Barondess/Centreville rounded out the goal scorers for Longwood with one of her own, and freshman Shiloh McKenzie/Lothian, Maryland registered one assist. Sophomore Christian Acker/Moorestown, New Jersey and freshman Caitlyn Miller/Vero Beach, Fla. split time in net, combining for seven saves in the decision.

High Point controlled the momentum early in the first half, scoring nine unanswered goals in 15 minutes to take a decisive advantage. Longwood broke the silence and got on the board with an unassisted goal by Prasnicki with 7:15 remaining in the period. The Lancers added another score when McKenzie dished a strong pass to Brentlinger for the shot on goal to make it 9-2 at 6:51. The Panthers retaliated quickly, however, ending the half on a 5-0 run to take a 14-2 advantage into the break.

The Lancers struck first coming out of halftime, as Brentlinger found Prasnicki open for the score. High Point answered with back-to-back goals to take a 16-3 lead with 22:51 still to go. After eight minutes of scoreless action, Longwood notched two consecutive goals, as Brentlinger and Barondess each found the back of the net unassisted. High Point scored once more in the outing, and although the Lancers tallied the final two goals of the game off the stick of McHugh, the Panthers secured the 17-7 decision.
