FARMVILLE, Va. – Freshman Katie McHugh/Burke logged three goals to pace the Lancers in a 19-9 setback against No. 12/16 the United State Naval Academy (12-1) on Tuesday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The score was tied at 3-3 early in the first half, but Navy outscored the Lancers, 11-5, for the duration of the period to pull away. Longwood (7-5) returns to action on Friday, April 5 when the squad wraps up a three-game home stand against Big South Conference opponent Coastal Carolina University. First draw is scheduled for 3 p.m.

"Navy is a strong team and they had two exceptional players, who were able to feed and score," said head coach Elaine Jones. "Unfortunately, we just couldn't quite match up against them. Also, Navy dominated the draw control, which severely limited our possessions. Although we were able to score in the first half on nearly every possession, in the second half, we continually lost the draw and were unable to get into any offensive flow. While I'm not pleased with the loss, this is yet another learning experience for our team, and I'm confident they will bounce back strong. We will take the next few days to work on several areas as we prepare for our conference game against Coastal Carolina on Friday."

Longwood converted on all eight of its shots in the first half, as McHugh completed the hat trick. In addition, freshman Sarah Butler/Oakleigh South, Victoria, Australia (2 goals, 1 assist) and sophomore Sarah Arndt/Pasadena, Maryland (1 goal, 2 assists) added to the offensive effort with three points apiece. Senior Jamie Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. logged two goals on the day, while junior Mary Barondess/Centreville posted one. Junior Lauren Prasnicki/Lexington and sophomore Liz Trainer/Ellicott City, Md. each recorded one assist, as well. All three Longwood goalkeepers saw action in the outing, as senior Molly Zimmerman/Fairpoint, New York came off the bench to post a team-high eight saves in 36+ minutes of action.

The offensive attack for both sides went to work quickly, as four goals were scored in the first three minutes. The Lancers won the opening draw and got on the board when Arndt found Butler open for the shot on goal less than 40 seconds into the contest. The Midshipmen responded with back-to-back scores to take their first lead of the day, but Brentlinger followed with a free-position goal to knot the game at 2-2 with 26:56 remaining in the first half. The squads then traded goals, with Barondess recording the point for Longwood, tying the game at 3-3.

Navy broke the stalemate with an unassisted goal from Jasmine DePompeo that sparked a 7-0 run for the visitors, giving the Mids a 10-3 advantage at 16:55. McHugh ended the drought for the Lancers, converting on a free-position attempt before scoring off of a cross from the right side by Trainer to cut the deficit to 10-5 at 12:14. The squads alternated possessions and scored two goals apiece to keep the buffer at five with just over seven minutes to play in the period. Navy connected on its next two attempts, but Longwood scored the final goal of the half, as Arndt scrambled to the ground to collect the loose ball and sent an off-balance shot past the Mids' goalkeeper to make it 14-8 at the break.

The second half saw much fewer scoring opportunities for both sides, but Navy was able to hold the Lancers scoreless for all but the final seconds of the game to secure the victory. Neither squad tallied a goal in the first four minutes after the break, but the Mids took control of the momentum and pace of play, scoring five unanswered over the course of the next 26 minutes. The Lancers had possession for the final play of the game, and Arndt chose not to take the free-position shot, but instead pass to Butler in the corner for the underhanded shot on goal with just seven seconds on the clock, making it a 19-9 final in favor of the visitors.

Navy was led by DePompeo with a game-high 10 assists and 13 total points. Tuesday's contest marked sixth meeting ever between Longwood and Navy in the sport of women's lacrosse. The Mids now hold a 5-1 edge in the all-time series.
