Longwood Drops 14-8 Decision at Virginia Tech



BLACKSBURG, Va. – Junior Lauren Prasnicki/Lexington posted a game-high four assists for a team-high four total points, as the Longwood University women's lacrosse team fell, 14-8, at Virginia Tech (8-5) on Wednesday afternoon in Blacksburg. Junior Mary Barondess/Centreville and freshman Katie McHugh/Burke added to the offensive effort with three goals apiece in the outing. Longwood will return to action on Sunday, April 14 at Presbyterian College beginning at 1 p.m.

Senior Jamie Brentlinger/Gambrills, Maryland tallied one goal and one assist for two points in the outing, while sophomore Sara Jacobson/Gainesville added one goal to round out the goal scorers for Longwood. Jacobson totaled a pair of caused turnovers, as well. Senior goalkeeper Molli Zimmerman/ Fairpoint, New York turned in the complete-game performance in goal, making nine saves and collecting a team-high four ground balls.

The squads played through almost eight minutes of scoreless action until Virginia Tech posted the first goal of the day at 22:10. The Lancers retaliated, as Prasnicki fed a strong pass to Jacobson for the score to knot the game at 1-1. The Hokies broke the tie with three consecutive goals over the next five minutes to pull ahead 4-1 with 11:37 remaining in the first half. Longwood cut the margin back to two on a goal from McHugh, but Virginia Tech scored the last three goals of the half to take a 7-2 advantage into halftime.

VT also scored the first goal of the second half less than 15 seconds into play, extending its buffer to six. Prasnicki and McHugh connected for the second time in the outing before Brentlinger found Barondess to make it 8-4 at 19:53 in the period. The teams battled back and forth for the next five minutes until the Hokies found the back of the net to go ahead, 10-6, with 12:55 to go. Just over a minute later, Prasnicki dished to Barondess to pull Longwood within three, but Virginia Tech put the game out of reach with a four-goal run, making it 14-7 with 3:41 remaining. The Lancers tallied the final goal of the outing when Barondess took it in unassisted at 1:23, but could not overcome the 14-8 deficit.
