STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Longwood University women's lacrosse team fell, 21-3, at Stony Brook University (4-1) on Saturday evening. The Lancers were led by senior
Jamie Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. with one goal and one assist for two points in the outing. Longwood returns to action on Wednesday, March 13 when the squad hosts Winthrop University for its first-ever Big South Conference home game beginning at 5 p.m.
"Stony Brook is a good team,” said head coach
Elaine Jones. “We didn't execute well and gave them too many open shots on goal, which they converted. It was a nice challenge for us and we will learn from this as we move forward with our upcoming games."
Sophomores
Sarah Arndt/Pasadena, Md. and
Sara Jacobson/Gainesville tallied one goal apiece to round out the goal scorers for Longwood. Juniors
Emily Whitman/Fairfax and
Lauren Prasnicki/Lexington each added one assist, as well. All three Longwood goalkeepers saw time in net in the outing. Sophomore
Christian Acker/Moorestown, N.J. plated the first half in its entirety, allowing 16 goals and making three saves. Senior Molli Zimmerman/Fairpoint, N.Y. logged four saves, while freshman
Caitlyn Miller/Vero Beach, Fla. added two.
Stony Brook got off to a quick start right out of the gate, scoring five goals in the first eight minutes of the contest to take an early advantage. Prasnicki found Arndt open for the shot on goal to put the Lancers on the board, but Longwood would not score again in the first half, as SBU posted 11 straight goals throughout the remainder of the period to take a 16-1 buffer into the break.
The Seawolves continued to attack offensively with five more goals to open the second half, marking a 16-0 through both halves. Longwood broke the silence with 6:42 still to play in the contest when Brentlinger connected with Jacobson for the score. The Lancers then scored the final goal of the night with just over one minute on the clock, as Whitman fed Brentlinger for the shot and goal, but it was not enough to overcome the large deficit.
