BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Longwood University women's lacrosse team outscored Campbell University (1-1), 12-4, in the second half to earn a 24-12 decision in its first-ever Big South Conference game on Tuesday evening in Buies Creek, North Carolina. Sophomore
Kacey Norwood/Chantilly led the Lancers (3-0) with game and career highs of seven goals and nine total points. Junior
Mary Barondess/Centreville (3 goals, 3 assists) and freshman
Katie McHugh/Burke (4 goals, 2 assists) added to the offensive effort with six points apiece, as well. Longwood will continue its three-game road swing at Central Connecticut State University on March 8. First draw is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The Lancers scored the first goal of the game less than two minutes into play, as Barondess found the back of the net unassisted. The squads alternated points, but Campbell followed with a pair of goals to take a 3-2 advantage with less than 25 minutes remaining in the half. Longwood answered with four-straight scores, two of which were assisted by senior
Jamie Brentlinger/Gambrills, Maryland, to pull ahead 6-3 at 19:11 in the first. The teams traded goals throughout the rest of the period with LU maintaining at least a two-point buffer. Brentlinger scored the final goal of the half for the Lancers to send her squad into the break with a 12-8 advantage.
The back-and-forth nature of the game continued early in the second half, as both sides tallied three goals in the first 10 minutes, but Longwood put the game out of reach with a 6-0 run that included a hat trick from Norwood, pulling away 21-11 with less than 13 minutes to play. Campbell scored one more goal on the night, but the Lancers recorded the last three to earn the 24-12 decision.
Three Lady Camels notched four points each to pace the home squad. Cloey Henchcliffe, Erica Hitch and Loren Day each logged three goals and one assist.
Brentlinger and junior
Lauren Prasnicki/Lexington totaled five and four points, respectively, in the outing, while freshman
Sarah Butler/Oakleigh South, Victoria, Australia notched a hat trick. Sophomores
Morgan Clark/Gainesville and
Sarah Arndt/Pasadena, Maryland rounded out the goal scorers for Longwood with one apiece. All three LU goalkeepers saw action in the victory. Sophomore
Christian Acker/Moorestown, New Jersey started the contest and picked up the win with a pair of saves, but freshman
Caitlyn Miller/Vero Beach, Florida logged a team high 39+ minutes in goal with three saves.
