RICHMOND, Va. – The Longwood University men's tennis team earned its first win of the season with a 4-1 decision against Morgan State University on Sunday afternoon in Richmond, Va. Longwood returns to action on January 26 when the squad takes on Norfolk State University beginning at 11 a.m. in Greenville, North Carolina.

“I am very pleased with our win today,” said head coach Jakob Gustafsson. “We are already improving as a team. A quote that is very applicable to our squad is: 'Give me a day and I'm good. Give me a week and I'm great. Give me sixth months and I'm unstoppable.' We are already good. We don't have another six months to become unstoppable, but we have enough time to become very tough to beat.”

Sophomore Steed Johnson|Ahoskie, N.C. (Needham B. Broughton) and freshman James Fudge|Kaarst, Germany (Millfield School) opened the day with a victory in doubles play, defeating the duo of Duwane Thomas and Jannick Tash in two sets to earn the point. Senior Giorgi Khmiadashvili|Tbilisi, Georgia (Public School 148) kicked off singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Ondre Cargill in the #1 position. Sophomore Daniel Elston|St. Austell, Cornwall, England (Ralph Allen School) and junior Edward Becker|Sydney, Australia (Manly Selective Campus) followed with victories at #2 and #4, respectively. The Lancers' only loss of the day came in the #3 singles position, as sophomore Harry Kelleher|Sydney, Australia (St. Aloysius College) fell to Evan Ward 6-4, 7-5.
